Default 4.8 cam choice

I've been surfing through the classifieds and I've came across two cams for my regular cam short bed silverado DD. One is a 02+ ls6 cam and the other is an ls2 cam. I'm waiting to hear back from the guy with the ls6 cam while I have a guy ready to get rid of the ls2 cam. I've looked at each of the cam specs and they seem to be very close. I was hoping someone would have experiences with both and could tell whether or not to hold out for the ls6 cam or jump on the ls2 cam. Thanks

Okay here's what we have.

LS6(02): 204/218 117.5lsa -2.5, lift .551"/.5.47".

LS2: 204/211 116lsa-2, lift.525/.525".

So with your 4.8 in a truck I'd go with the LS2 IF I had to chose between the two. My reason is that you need all the low to midrange power you can get, and the wider lsa and exhaust split of the ls6 is going to give you less of it. With LS2 cam I'd get an adjustable time gear set and advance it +6*. This will give it a little more power down low (204/212 116lsa+4).
Still neither one of these cams is ideal for truck use. I'd recommend going with at least a CompCams #54-408-11 (206/212 112lsa+2, lift .515"/.522") for better results.

May I ask why? I'm looking at highway driving and overall performance. I figured the 116 or 117lsa would give me better fuel mileage and more top end power. Please give me a better insight to this please

You are going to lose low end power with both the ls6 and ls2, and advancing either one of them will help in that regard but they'll both still be slower in the lower rpm range.
Here's the stock 4.8 cam specs:
190/191 .466/.457 114 LSA .

Since you're looking to improve top end performance but not lose any down low, here's what I recommend:
CompCams #54-412-11 (212/218 114lsa+2, lift .522"/.529) and for even a better cam , if you don't mind more aggressive cam lobes then look at
the Lunati VooDoo #20540710 (212/218 113lsa+4, lift.531"/.531").

There's also a bunch of other cams, roughly around the 212/218 size that should also work good.

Im new to the whole forum thing, but I have an 04 4.8 and an ls7 cam and springs. What do I need to make it work? Its going in a sandrail, so torque isn't really an issue and high rpm is good for me.
