Default What should I mill my 243's to? (233/239 cam)

I have the TSP 233/239 112 LSA cam. I also want to keep my Hardened TSP 7.400 push rods. I just want to know what I can mill these to safely without worrying about clearance issues. What head gasket should I order? Currently have the crappy 853's on the car.

Also, can I keep my stock Rockers as long as I do the Trunion upgrade?

If you want to keep your 7.400 pushrods then nothing. If you start milling your heads, you're going to need shorter pushrods to keep the same valvetrain geometry and lifter preload.

So what mill/pushrods combo would you suggest then? I don't want to mill them very much.

You really can't do it that way. You have to measure once milled. There's no guarntee the milling will directly relate to pushrod length.

So it's a wait and see type thing?

So if I don't want to go to wild, what should I mill them to? I want to keep it running on pump gas.

FWIW im putting a build to together using a cam very very close to yours but ive got 241's. The guy who speced my cam said I can't mill my heads any because of clearance issues. BUT he also said 243 have a tid bit better ptv clearence. im sure im wrong but you want around .100 intake and .90 exhaust to be safe But you can run pump gas all the way to 11.5:1

Good info.

I just got off the phone with Texas Speed and they said nothing more than 7 thousandths. Does this sound right?

And in another thread TSP said this.

Unless boost or nitrous is being used on the motor a new set of stock head bolts would work just fine. You can go ARP if you want a reusable set, but they are not required.

Honestly if the cam is that close I would just not mill the heads. .010 will get you MAYBE .15-.2 higher compression which isnt worth it in my book. I'd just do a cleanup pass on them to make sure theyre traight and install them as that.

In short there's no good way to tell how much you can take off, every setup will vary. You may have ptv issues at .010 and other guy running the same setup may not have it until .015. Since you arent going to measure I would just let it alone, better safe than sorry

my 799s had .010" off for cleanup (but I do not know if they have been milled or cleaned up before)

my cam is a 230/238 113+2

I did not measure PTV, my same 7.4" pushrods worked as stock heads and a 230/224 cam but I also went from GM Performance lifters from several years ago to some lifters from a Vortec 350 because they are what I had. The Vortec lifters require higher preload than say LS7 lifters or later years stock LS1 lifters. I tried running shorter pushrods and the car got bad bad noisy.

IIRC the lifters I am using require a .125" preload versus the .040-.080" of newer style lifters.

I will just follow the advice given and just have them cleaned up. What gasket kit should I buy?

It'd be close. Just flycut and mill and buy whatever camshaft you want. It's not hard.
