Depends on how bad the car is, Restoring a car is very rarely worth the time and money it will take unless it's something you plan on keeping and not selling for a profit. don't plan on getting your money back unless it's a rare car (81 firebird isn't rare) . Restorations are very expensive.
If you are doing a restomod then the cost can be less but again depending on the condition of the car you're working with you may or may not get your money back if you decide to sell it. It also depends on if you are able to do the work yourself or if you will have to pay someone to do it. I look at my cars as hobbies and enjoy working on them and improving them and figure I'll be lucky if I get half my money back but I enjoy it so it's worth it to me.

Exactly.
81 is heavy and slow to begin with... but if you go the restomod route and drop an LS1 in there, go with updated suspension and brake pieces, and bring it back, it could be fun to do yourself.
However, I'd look for a 76-79 with a 400 Pontiac in it and do some serious work to that car.
