Default Which snake oil do u reccomend 4 lifter tick

My 2005 tahoe only has 228k on it and in the real cold weather last week it developed a lifter tick in startup. It is quite loud in comparison to other lifter noises i have heard on other cars in the past. But it takes the truck almost to operating temp till it goes away. I change the oil every 4-5k weither it needs it or not and use a delco filter with the anti drain back feature (pf46)

I never really pay attention to that giant wall of snake oil in the parts store but i remember my father using a quart of marvel mystery oil to eliminate a sticky lifter in his old sea ray with a flat tappet cam.

Has anyone used marvel to cure a lifter tap on a roller cam with sucess? Or if there are better products out there i am open to suggestions. I am really looking for personal experiance. Not the hearsay and opinions of people that talk jibberish with no factual evidance of their claims that you tend to see in every damn oil thread ya know?

If you had a lifter noise and you found a product that worked. Id like to know about it thanks.

I tried google and i hear gunk makes a motor flush and rislone (or something like that) make claims about freeing up sticky lifters.

Not very likely to be sticky lifters.

My wifes 04 thaoe 5.3 has 141k and developed a sticking lifter that hammered for 45sec to 1min while idling it sounded like a rod knocking. I changed the oil and added a quart of marvel and within 100 miles it was cured. Good stuff if you ask me.

German Castrol, Shell Rotella-T, or Valvoline VR1. Or heavier weight Mobil 1.

I'm a fan of Castrol Edge (gold bottle) 5w30 myself... Has quietened down 4 LSx motors of mine.

2 LS1's, an LQ9, and an L92

Bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer has worked on multiply vehicles for me. It's thick *** **** and kinda just sticks to parts. Not a cure all or anything but has quieten down lifters before.

Lucas is garbage, it is thick oil with almost no additives so it dilutes the additive package in whatever oil you are using. If that actually helped anything you would be MUCH better off just using a thicker weight in whatever oil you prefer.

I have used Rotella in a few high mileage engines to help clean things up, being diesel targeted but gas rated it has a bit stronger detergent package than most gasoline targeted oils. I always found that a thousand miles or so after begining to use Rotella the valvetrain would get a little louder at idle and a filter change would resolve that for another 1000-2000 till I drained it. Not scientific but lead me to believe it was cleaning and depositing crap in the filter reducing idle flow to the topend.
If an engine is really dirty AutoRX is the ticket.

I was thinking thinner oil would have a better chance of entering a lifter than thick oil in cold weather. Why would thicker oil pump up a lifter in freezing temps? What oil cured your lifter noise?

I tried some Rislone oil treatment I got at Walmart in my wife's Jeep. I was quite skeptical but for $5 I gave it a shot. Thing is - it actually worked LOL. Before it had a noisy lifter at startup and I could still hear it even when it warmed up. But now it's all quiet. It is pretty thin, not like STP or other oil treatment stuff I've seen.

If you know the lifter that's giving you problems then remove the rocker above it and spray a healthy dose of Chemtool B12 down the pushrod hole and let it sit for a few hours then do a oil and filter change, this should clean out any obstruction in the lifter allowing it function normally again. If this doesn't work then it's time to replace the lifter/s..

Poor a bottle of SeaFoam in crankcase. Idle only for 15 min. Change oil and filter. 1000 mi later change oil again. I did it at about 80k miles in my Avalanche and worked perfect!

This is kinda old school, but on the old sbc's we used to put a litre of dextron in with the oil and run it till the next oil change. It would usually cure a sticky lifter.

The Dexron was just thin oil, the myth had been it was high in detergents but that is wrong because with no combustion contaminants detergents are not needed. If you want to go the thin oil route I would sooner swap a couple quarts of 5w-20 at the next oilchange.

AutoRx is the best cleaner I am aware of.

Rislone was designed for this. I've used it on several engines with "stuck" lifters. If that is in fact all that is wrong, rislone usually takes care of it. Follow the direction on the back. (I've used dex3 with similar results)

Actually, if you are using a multi viscosity oil, it's initial weight is lower. The W in 5W 30 means in colder conditions the weight is 5 until operating temp where it will perform like a conventional 30. Are you using a synthetic? What weight oil?

What you just said sounds like you believe oil thickens as it warms? You have that wrong.

The W is measured at 0 degrees!! The 30 weight I do believe is measured at 200 degrees if I remember correctly.
