Default Running stupid Rich after 228R Cam install

Okay folks, like title says.

I installed TSP 228R Cam along with a newer set of 241 Heads from a vette with only 20k miles (not happy about having to do that either, previous owner had unmatched 241's on car). Did whole nine yards, ported oil pump, springs, etc. TSP Tuned my PCM and I have not had a single check engine light. The car is running great it didn't fall on it's face or anything even the initial start. The biggest problem I am having is my MPG is like 9/14. With a full tank of gas I got 220 miles. About 180 of those miles where all highway doing 80 MPH in sixth. The car has no cat's and headers with xpipe and custom true duals but I can smell my fuel bad. Like don't stand behind the car or you will instantly smell like exhaust fumes bad.

I am thinking about calling TSP which I am sure one of you guys will chime in but I wanted to let the PCM dial in to the car and I did wait for the cam to break in before romping on it (about 300 miles) but I did not change my driving style at all (used to get 300-320 to a tank). Is this a simple tuning problem or is this common after internal mods? I did pull two plugs (ngk tr55) and they have white spots on the ground electrode and pretty black at the base (brand new plugs when I swapped heads).

It says right n his post that he has a mail tune from TSP. To the op a canned tune for a cam isnt meant to be a total fix. You still need a real dyno tune the mail one will get you to the tuner but its not meant to be the final tune. That could be the sole contributor but also check for a vac leak or slow o2 sensors if all that checks fine you need a real tune.

Yeah, was afraid of this. Didn't know if they could change some of the tables to lean it out a bit, but o well. O2 sensors are densos I just put on a year ago, so I'm hoping those didn't go bad. Double checked all the hoses also when I was strapping up the motor and everything was fine.

Well Nick D here I come. Really wanted to hold out for some heads but the prices of 243's are going for like 600-700 dollars unported in southern arizona, thats friggin insane.

I agree, a mail order tune is only to get you to a dyno and tune it correctly. your issue is w the mail order tune

Mail Order tune is most likely the culprit. If you have a wideband O2, a street tune can be useful for fixing A/F ratio and dialing it in on the street.

also cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner is never a bad idea, if it was off during the cam swap a piece of debris or shop towel fuzz could have landed on the sensor element

Did you resize the injectors for the cam swap or are you still using the 29lbs stockers?

I have some MAF cleaner sitting around, I will give it a shot tonight.

Nope still running the stockers, I did clean them up really good before mounting them back on the intake but thats it as far as the injectors go.

Sprayed MAF did another browse around engine bay. The PCV Valve hose that starts at the driver side valve cover is stupid loose like I can easily pull it out, anyone elses like that or think this could be causing a vacuum leak. The grommet is still there just wondering if constant installing and removing made it too loose.

mines like that as many others ive seen i wouldnt worry about that. if it was causing a vac leak big enough to cause fuel problems the car would run like crap

Yeah I think the car is running amazing IMO, the tune is just making it drink gas. Using torque pro the other night I did first 0-60 pull in 4.9 seconds with an altitude of 4650 ft and a bit of wheel spin.

Kind of off topic, but wheres the power band at on that cam? I am looking for a cam with a 2,500-5,000 power band with a nice idle.

Then this is the cam for you. 2,500 I feel it start to pull and 3,000 when powerband kicks in and she does not want to let go until 6,000+. Idle is good was hoping for more lope but I think TSP raised my idle to 900 from 750 for AC. So if I had stayed at 750 the lope would have sounded better. But it also didn't develop a nice choppy lope until about 300-400 miles in once everything was broken in.

Also have a 112 LSA, maybe a 110 would have helped that a little bit more.

I have a TV2 cam and if I baby it or do a lot of interstate driving the best I have seen is about 220 miles on a tank of gas. Normal driving my low fuel light cuts on right around 190-200 miles. Dyno tuned by Frost.

What is your car tuned with? Programmer or HPT? A lot of your rich is your altitude. At high el you need way less fuel then a car at sea level.

If you are smelling fuel that bad at the back of the car....Guess you are washing the bores nicely with fuel.
Get it dyno tuned before you wreck it.

My 2000 Firehawk w/ 6 speed w/ lid got 220 miles per tank regardless of how I drove it. Just FYI.
