Best heads for 05 lq4
Need some help putting a plan for my lq4 build on a budget, Looking for around 450hp. should I keep the 317 heads(not going with turbo) or go with another head,. So far I have the lq4 $400, ls6 valve springs $60 and an ls1 intake,TB, and fuel rail $40. sold the truck intake for $30 and the oil pan for $50 and picked up a Camaro oil pan(going in a 67 Chevelle rag top) any help like do arp bolts, better oil pump that kind of stuff. thanks mike

I'm running an lq4 with ls1. 241 casting mildly ported heads . they are milled to 63.5 cc chambers and stock gasket puts me about 10.3/1 compression.
If I went to 62 cc and a .040 gasket it would be 10.86/1
Your springs are not going to support enough camshaft and the ls1 intake is not as good as the Truck intake.
My combo is the heads I listed, fast 90 int. Edelbrock stepped race headers, f14 cam and it out out 452/422 at wheels

The truck intake was far better than the LS1/LS6. Should have sold the LS1 intake. Hell the truck intake is probably on par with the FAST 92. The Truck FAST is an absolute beast.
LS6 springs don't do much for you unless you plan to run a Hot Cam (which might not be a bad option - 218/228 112 with mild lobes).
You can get the 317s welded up to keep piston-to-valve clearance and then port them. They'd be the same as the 243s then with more compression. And cheaper. See if Advanced Induction can do that. They do it with the 241s...

Can't reuse GM headbolts but they are cheap to replace.
On rodbolts the ARP require resizing of the rod bigend.
Seeing as your car had room for a big old airclearer on top of a carb and a rear mount distributor I bet you have room for the truck intake.
I would consider having AI weld up the 317s since you have them. As said makes them the same as 243s.
Far as the oilpump I think the 05 motor got the "LS6" pump and like said it got upgraded rodbolt compared to early LS1s.
Don't get caught up in what the LS1s need or that they are "car engines" and therefore "must" be higher hp than truck. The LS1 came before the motor you have and a lot of "lessons learned" were applied and in the case of the intake the truck had room for the intake the engineers wanted to design rather than needing to clear a low cowl and hood.

I wouldn't touch the rod bolts on an 05.
Ported LS6 oil pump would be okay for peace of mind. And I'd get a Cloyes billet adjustable timing set with either their standard chain or the C5R chain.
Just going to a slightly better chain isn't where the goodness comes from. It's the timing gears themselves. The Cloyes are adjustable and are more precise than stock.
