Oil pump bypass???

Oil pump internal bypass??? Does the orientation of the holes in the oil pump bypass plunger matter? I noted while looking at the interior of the pump that one of the plunger holes was slightly showing.
Also, how exactly does the bypass work? Excess pressure pushed down the plunger, and the oil is diverted back through the small hole that I am seeing back into the pump body?
