Default Look at my rear main and shoddy hoist mount...

Hey there! I have a question, my first LS engine (or v8!) And I'm swapping my 06 GTO pan for an F-body.After pulling the trans I noticed my rear main had a drop of oil or two on the bottom lip, is that normal? (30k motor) on these or should it bee 100% dry? That leads me too if it is bad...is it best to remove the rear cover and seal and reinstall while the pan is still on? That way my only adjustment on the cover will be left to right, I'm nervous without the alignment tool the main is gonna leak!!

Also, first time using a stand, are these mounting points acceptable? I need to get some washers cause my bolts are a about a 1mm too long.

Thanks everyone this community is the best I've been involved with in my car enthusiast lifetime.

Let the seal center itself so that it has even pressure all the way around and snug the rear cover down. Just make sure the bottom edge of the back cover is flush enough so the oil pan gasket will seal against it and the block.

Thanks! Any reason not to do it with the pan still installed? Get the rear cover tight then swap the pans...

Unless I was replacing the cover gasket as well I'd just pop the seal out and install a new one.

The alignment tool I have is used with the seal removed. The goals is to center the cover, not the seal. You could gently pry out the old seal and put in a new one.

In theory, it's better to use grade 5 bolts there instead of grade 8. Grade 5's will bend where a grade 8 will fracture. But there's so little stress there that I don't think it really matters as long as they're tight and not bottoming out.

yes I would put some washers on those bolts. Just remember to take your time and don't rush you will do fine.

I ended up putting 3 washers on each bolt, I went ahead and put the hoist back on also and brought the hanging slack out of the stand, just for when it's sitting for days on end.

That engine stand mount looks good to me, but if you're worried about it, you can try this:
