I put a Moroso 3-vane Vacuum pump on my new motor. Only difficult part was fabricating a bracket to mount down where the AC compressor used to be.

Here's a pic to give you an idea.

not on a big CI motor, but I had one on my 346......it picked up HP but pulled oil out of the pan. In order to catch the oil I had to put a number of catch cans and breathers connected to the output of the pump and finally it became so restrictive that the vacuum level fell off and then I just had drag (for spinning the pump). I finally ditched it because what little gain I did get was not worth the trouble.

I always use a vacuum pump with low tension rings.I have seen good power increases with small and big block chevy's.I have not tried a pump on an LS1 motor, yet.

Fear,
Where did you connect the suction to? Did you use a breather on the valve cover? a vacuum breaker on the valve cover?
Have you run this setup yet?? Thanks for any help. I am looking into a similar setup.

Brent, they do help. On a big motor you could see good gains. Skip any battery powered pumps. Only a belt driven pump can create the required vaccum. Look for some posts by jmX on testing some of the battery powered pumps...

Here is how I'm fabricating mine up. Unfortunately the space where the AC goes is taken up so I'm mounting it up higher. That would have been my first choice though. You can see how I'm fabricating my bracket so far. It's a paper copy of one that will be cut out of aluminum.

I'm going to use a Gimler on a spline drive attached to the front of the balancer as well. The HTD behind my pulley will be occupied as well. Here's how I'm going to drive mine: http://www.petersonfluidsys.com/Photos/dragdrive.jpg

Here's pic for you:

I have a -12AN hose running from the passenger valve cover to the "IN" on the vacuum pump. Then another -12AN hose from the pump to a Moroso Breather Tank. On the driver side we installed a vacuum nipple for a vacuum guage and an Aerospace Vacuum Relief Valve.

I none of the stock PCV crap on there, and I used vacuum caps to plug off the intake PCV and fresh air ports.

Lee,
That looks awesome! I can't afford all the stuff to do it like that, and I think I have come up with another solution for my particular situation.

I appreciate you taking the time to post up the pic though! I'm sure that will help others trying to put together a serious setup!

Thanks again,
Bret
