Default LQ4 thinner than you think

Mind you, this is just one block but it warrants some thought. This long block is a `00 iron headed standard bore 6.0 I found at a local wrecker when i was searching for rear axle shaft. The owner of the yard told me it was for sale but was a core and not a known good engine (as is) and had 251K on it, $350 was the price. I got it home and disassembled it thinking BIG stroker for the future, maybe sell off some parts from it like the pan, crank/rods and heads. I was amazed at how good the cylinders looked, no ridge etc. Got it all apart and measured the thickness of the cylinders.

I was amazed at how good the cylinders looked, no ridge etc. Got it all stripped down and decided to see just how thick these things are and performed an Ultra sonic test on it and was shocked to see that this one only average .135" thick towards the rear of all interior cylinders 2,4,3,5. I have always been told about .125 (an 1/8) thick was absolute minimum and not recommender for a performance app. If you bored this .030" over (.015" off each side) you'd be below the that. This block is a good candidate for .005 or .010 over, nothing more.
Well, they aren't siamesed blocks so they can't be very thick there. What you're seeing is probably pretty average considering the 4.40" bore spacing. Besides, if .125" is your minimum, I don't think .120" wall thickness is a deal breaker.

I am going to pick up another early 6.0 block here and will do the same measurement, if it shows roughly the same towards the rear of the interior bores then I'll just assume that's how they are and go .030 over but not .065" like some do. It would be interesting to get a bare 4.8/5.3 and measure the thickness of those bores or even a LQ9.

Crazy as it sounds I've seen a three 4.125 6.0's running around here. None with power adders or big power but one has a ls7 rotating assembly,ls7 heads and a heathy cam.

I'm running a 4.065 iron block with a ls3 rotating assembly.

Same here. Just had the heads off and the cylinders still look really good.
