Yes, a machine shop is required. There is some specialized equipment that is used to install the pins. They are not actually pressed in. The rod pin bores are heated in a rod oven so that the bores open up. The pins are lubes and slide in, but a special fixture is used to make sure they go in straight and centered. It has to be done quickly and accurately so that the pins don't get stuck in the wrong position when the rod pin bore cools and contracts.

There is a guy on here that has done that in his shop by heating up th rods and pressing them in. He had a video doing it but i can't remember his name. Something like agearhead4life.

Well that diy does seem kinda shadetree compared to the fixture I imagine.
Of course, so were my homemade deals to do my 4l60e job.
But they did work for one go round at least.
However the piston to pin and rod fit seem much more delicate.
Does anyone know a good machine shop around Cincinnati?
