Ls1 and 243 heads, but what else??
So A five years back I put a stock 1998 Ls1 in my Chevelle 1970 and has since then been driving it as is.
A couple of months ago I happend to buy a set of 243 heads from a Ls2 and am now thinking of installning them, but that is were all the questions started.
I want to put in A new cam and do a truninon kit upgrade and maybe change the intake as well. And the more I read up on the subject the more confused I get.
I drive the car long distance to car shows so i dont want it pouring in fuel and I want it drivable for crusing nights.
What cam and intake would you pick? I am at a loss....
In horse power numbers 450 hp?

Contact Pat G.... the hot cam is out of date.... nicer than factory but not as big of a gain as a aftermarket grind will bring to the table. The intake kinda depends on your power goal and your budget..

I went with a Texas Speed torquer, the V.2 kit. I think they have a V3 or V4 by now.
I did their cam, springs, pushrods, ported and shimmed oil pump, Yella Terra rockers, FAST 78 intake, LS2 chain, and a two piece timing cover if I ever want to swap the cam again.
Car still gets 25mpg if I'm easy on it and has zero bucking, chugging or, any odd behavior - and sounds evil as all hell.

If you are talking 450 flywheel horsepower, very achievable. Plenty of moderate cams out there that will run good and not kill your economy too much.
If you're talking RWHP, don't expect 450 from stock 243 heads and a mild cam. Honestly more in the 400 range.

I am going to be using the new Fitech Ultimate LS induction system that they released at
SEMA this year.

IMO, you should go for something a bit more aggressive. I think something in the 225/235ish sounds good for your application. A moderate stall will really wake up your car also with very little sacrifice in driveability.

As for the FITech thing, those runners look REALLY short on that manifold. Short runners usually sacrifice power in the lower RPM for power higher in the RPM. That's basically the opposite of what you want in a street car. There are a few published tests on the different length runners in the FAST LS3 intake to help illustrate the point.

This is my Go-to cam for 5.3-6.0 engines that want something mild that makes good power.

If its already running, why on earth would you go with the FITech?

Thanks for all the great respons guys!
To answer the question about the switch to Fitech the simple answer is that I have been looking att many other different intakes and I think the price is fair. After looking at several different intakes and what they cost I think this is a good setup.
I now have the original GM harnest that came with the engine and to tune that you have to buy HP tuners or some other tuner progam for like 500+ just for the program and that is not okej in my opinion.
So I think you get a lot of bang for you buck.
I also want every thing to fit under the stock hood of the Chevelle, otherwise I would go with the Holley hi-ries intake.
But as with the cam I am open for all you suggestions!
THX again everybody!
