Default update to my broken spring

well... I got real lucky......
and I mean REAL lucky....

Broke #6 intake valve spring.....

Pictures

got a replacement spring.....
put it on... put the compression checker on.... spun the motor a few times with the starter..no coils or injectors on.... and I got good compression..and seals nicely with no leaks...
which means everything survived... no bent valves

In the very near future(next couple of weeks....) I will be buying some patriot gold dual springs.....
for peace of mind....
and because if one broke... maybe Its time for a replacement set anyways....

just gettting some heat cycles on the new spring... so I can drive it like normal again.....

My personal experience is when one spring breaks, the others are really close behind. I would change out all the springs very quickly. I didn't and I lost a valve. Only had to replace a short block and another head!

lucky for sure! How did you know it was broken before removing the valve cover, or did you know?

What springs are you running? The one thing I think about duals is that they give people a false sense of security. If the motor is running slow and one breaks, the valve should be fine. If you're close to redline, theres still a good chance the valve is going to make contact. Theres just not enough spring pressure then.

I was gonna say, I didnt think they looked like 918s. They still haven't let me down I still can't figure out why more people arent running them who dont have the need for duals? The manleys also have less spring pressure than the comps.

I think it boils down to what everyone considers as (need) for dual springs. I know I went with them for inurance reasons. If you break the outer at least the inner will possibly keep the valve off the piston

How can you tell if you have a broken spring before it's too late?

In the case of having dual springs you might notice a drastic change in the way it is running. Consider the instance of the inner spring not being able to close the valve soon enough.. (maybe backfiring) engine stumbling for instance. Or you hear a loud clicking noise.

If you have single springs. You probably know when it goes BOOM and bends the valve pokes a few hole here or there.

Vacuum gauge. You'll loose vacuum when the valve floats, unless it already floated into the piston.

Wow.... What kind of damage would you be looking at? Head/piston damage only? Like that wouldn't be enough.

Other than the spring, a bent valve. Depending on how fast you shut it down, chewed head and piston. Worst case, metal shavings take out the whole bottom end.

Shoot you can just JB-Weld the spring back together and it will be good as new.

The Only prob. with 918's is they lose Spring Pressure way to soon with a decent cam

Thats not necessarily true. I'll be retesting my 918s in the fall, but they have 25k on them right now with my XER cam. They do lose some pressure immediately after breakin, but after that it stabilizes. They'll go 30k in my application easily...I didnt really expect much more than that anyway. The jury isnt in on the Patriot duals or the Comp duals yet, as they're too new.
