Default Leaking oil pan - porosity? Comments please

My 2002 'Bird engine has a really minor oil leak. I haven't run it yet but in the 4 days it's sat in the garage, the drip hasn't fallen to the floor yet. The leak is coming from the small bump on the bottom of the pan (see picture 1). There are no signs of damage inside or out and I think it could just be a porous spot in the pan. What the hell is that bump anyway? It looks like they have put it there to give clearance to the big end - seems like shoddy engineering to me - why the hell isn't the whole pan 1/2" bigger?

Anyway, the inside of the engine looks good (I think) - see for yourself...
