Default Patriot Golds installed (pics) and the "BuckeyeROC" install tool

Here are a few pics of the Patriot Golds I just installed.

Pics 1 and 2 have 4 valves with the Golds, and 4 with the stockers. Pic 3 has all the Golds on.

I think I used the most ghetto spring tool known to man. 2 electrical junction box covers with "U" shapes cut into them, a couple washers, and a rocker arm bolt, which was on my bad rocker arm that is being replaced anyway. $130 for a spring install tool? NO WAY!!! I just used what was lying around. I used that Autozone spring tool to remove the stock springs, but it would not work with the dual springs, couldn't grip both the inner and outer springs enough for the install. So I HAD to improvise. Honestly, it works GREAT. Patent pending

Good improv man.
However let me point out that with the heads off, you do not need any of these top tools. A regular old fashionned C clamp spring tool will do the job!! Can be rented for 5 bucks/day

Nice

I bet you'll enjoy those springs!! We prefer to run the Patriot spring in just about every package we sell... Besides they're the best looking spring available!!

Just the driver side head was off, had some problems with a rocker letting needle bearings go on that side and dropping the retainer in the pushrod hole.

These springs do look good, can't wait to get this thing started up.

Actually, in this case, "stinginess is the mother of invention".

If it works, who cares what it looks like. Good job.

I wish it was. I went to a few auto parts stores and ended up buying a tool that works similar, looks like a big crow bar type thing. You hook it up to the rocker stud/screw and pull the handle down to compress the spring while it's on the head. It said it was for GM springs, but it was too big to work at all on the LS1. It was too big too use even with the head that was off the car. So it was either make my own tool or spend $130 and wait a week.

That is exactly what comes to my mind. But hey, my hats off to you for making it work.
