Exclamation Comp Cams 918 spring broke

2000 SS. A Broken 26918 Comp Cams spring after only 100 miles on mild MTI C1 cam. Very nice on the phone and promptly sent me a full new set with seals.

Well, that's a start....

I have not asked them yet to reimburse me for my mechanic's time, the one bent valve, resurfacing the valve seats or the tow truck.

HELP! The bent valve punched #3 piston pretty good. The single ding looks almost like you had the piston flycut. But not so deep, I'll measure it tomorrow..

"LS1 doctors" with all respect....WHAT ARE MY CHANCES? Can these LS1 pistons take a hit like that and keep on ticking? Is it likely or not likely there is more damage to the cam, bearings, etc? I need your experience and your replies.

I know Comp Cams had a problem a while back and promised the LS1 community that was behind them. Maybe some old stock found it's way to me. Let's hope so.

LOTS OF Thanks
Ram

2000 SS M6 black vert. MTI C1 cam, Jet hot LT's and Y Xcats, 4:10's, NOS, and stuff like that.....

The stripe on the springs has changed color on the new ones.(BLUE)
Piston will have to be changed. Could have cracked something below visual line. motor has to come appart.

Important News! My springs did not have blue stripes. Must be Old inventory! MAKE SURE YOUR COMP CAM SPRINGS ARE PAINTED WITH OBVIOUS BLUE STRIPES.

I expect Comp Cams will help me with my reasonable expenses. I will keep LS1tech commmunity posted as to the outcome. My mechanic charges half normal rates and I only expect to be reimbursed for what I paid.

The ding in the piston is only about 3mm deep max. I will post pix asap. Mechanics in the area who saw it say they would smooth it off and should be alright, sans N20. (there's another sacrifice)

Will keep you informed...

I'll tell you what to do. Get a G5X3 on a 112, this way you'll have to flycut pistons and that way all your cylinders will be done the same and will be balanced. (Kinda joking)

I would not run the motor without taking it appart once there is PV contact. Under stress, side skirt or pin area in piston, could be cracked, and will completely destroy your motor upon failure. You could just take the opportunity to check your rings and replace rod bolts.

918 spring is the right spring for Comp XE lobes and equivalents. If you run them with XER you have to reduce the peak rpm to maintain control. Im not going to start a "spring" debate here but Dual springs, with larger retainers is a step backwards requiring more seat and open pressure than 918's in order to control valvetrain and its "extra weight". Under 7k and .600" there is only one spring to use IMHO.

FWIW, Thunder gave me some 918's with a pretty blue stripe on them.

I'm real sorry to hear about the troubles RB.

Thanks you guys.

Predator, I know you are right...I just have no choice right now, outta time and funds....If she blows, I'll have to get a used LS1.

We've got a couple of mechanics saying they've seen a kiss like this and they have held up. (I'll get pix to show you the ding, maybe by Tuesday)

Anyone have an X Ray machine? kidding.

There are 2-3 threads on here a week with PTV contact. I think you will be fine as long as it goes back together without KR and noise.

Pretty much it looked like a fly cut for a big lift cam, only on the exhaust side. I sanded down the sharp edges to prevent hot spots and it didn't look too bad once it was dressed up. I got the head back on and the valve train back together today We will get the intake etc. on and start 'er up tommorow.

Did you buy them from a shop? I can't believe anyone would still be selling the "old" 918's. If you have an old set of non blue stripe 918's Comp will exchange them for you for free. So it makes no sense that any shop would sell them. Not to mention the blue stripes have been out almost 2 years.

Exactly...collecting dust on a shelf at MTI.

MTI sold them to me on 6-21-2004 along with the C1 cam, and other stuff.

Unless you already have '01 918's in your engine,

ONLY USE 918's WITH BLUE STRIPES!!!

Jason will help me post pix probly tomorrow. Tom's gett'n it done. Thanks guys
