Default Head Gasket???

I am about to put some stage 2, 5.7 heads on my car, but the heads are 98 style and my block is a 02. My question is do I buy the 98 style or 02 style head gaskets or is there a difference?

Thanks Guys,
Adam

Yes I know that the valve covers are different, but I am talking about the gasket between the head and the block. I am not talking about the valve cover gasket.

I know that there is a difference in thickness between the 97-98 gaskets and the later ones that compensate for the larger chambers on the early heads (69 compared to 66)
I also understand that there is an "indention" on the block that requires the use of the early gasket to prevent a water leak. I would think that the use of the later block would eliminate the need to use the earlier gasket for anything other than raising the compression.
You could proably contact one of the head vendors to find out for sure

Post Gasket for Early Heads on Late Block

Hi,
Late gaskets will leak water at cylinder 3 & 6 on early heads.
Late heads can use early gaskets.
I haven’t found a difference in the blocks that would require a specific gasket.

To use perimeter bolt heads on a ’02 block, I would use the NAPA gaskets (graphite type). These are ~0.010” thinner than the late MLS gaskets (that are ~0.062”) and very cheap.

Good luck,
Steve

There is a indent on both cylinder heads on 97-98 heads. You will need to use graphite type gaskets on those heads. Cometic makes a MLS gasket that will seal with those heads, but the GM MLS will not seal.

Not to hijack this tread, but i have the exact opposite problem...I have a 98 and bought some 2000 heads...so i can use the napa 99 and up gasket and be safe right?
