Default Anyone have an ASA cam?

226/236 .525/.525 110lsa

I know people don't use this much, but it could be exactly what I'm looking for (I never want to have to change valve springs, good mid range and top end up to 6400). I know it won't idle very well due to the overlap.

Can someone with this cam give me a breakdown of how it performs at different RPM ranges? With tuning of course. I own HP Tuners and my own wideband, so tuning isn't a problem.

Will it idle at 800 rpm? 1000? 1200? How about at 2000, does it make much torque then? Is cruising in 6th at 1800 rpm on the highway no longer an option?

There aren't any cammed LS1s around me, so I'm trying to figure out what to expect.

Thanks for any help.

I'm under the impression that the ASA cam is streetable as long as you are willing to deal with the slight driveablity issues it has (surging, occasional stalling in parking lots, stuff like that)

There's another post around here saying GM has a specific PCM with tuning for the ASA cam you can buy.

I would be very interested to see what changes they made.

Just type in "ASA Cam" in the search. It called up a ton of stuff when I just did it.

Besides the friendly .525 lift, the ASA has a killer torque curve and has just about the meanest lope I've ever heard. The asa with some GMPP LS6 CNC heads would make a great combo.

I did do a search, but couldn't find any specific info. People seem to says "It idles like crap", or "its not streetable" or "its perfectly streetable". None of that really tells me anything, since its all subjective. If someone could give me quantifiable info on how the cam drives (ie "it surges at any rpm bellow XXX") that would be great.

Just like any cam will idle if the rpms are high enough, any cam is streetable as long as the rpms are kept up while driving. A good question to ask about the asa cam is how low of rpm can it be driven before it starts to buck and surge. I would guess that as long as the rpms are about 2k it should run smooth. Ive never seen this cam in person so my guess doesnt mean jack.

That may be so but physics doesn't change.

If sniffer test is not a big concern ASA fits the requirements perfectly.

Did you happen to find any dyno graphs when you searched?

Well i just recently ( 3 weeks ago ) put the cam in my car. It's a A4 and i got it to idle without tuning. It is a daily driver. pulls pretty good in 1st/2nd gear. it does occasionally die on me going into reverse. the only times i have trouble, if any, is when i first fire up the car. other than that it idles good. Hope it helped.

ive had the asa cam for about 6 months. its very streetable. i have no problems at all it made 368 hp and 364 tq with mods in sig. but i had the cats in place. the tuner said it would probably make 20 hp more if i had off road pipes. i changed to off road pipes and it made a big difference. but i havent dynoed it again. i still have stock throttlebody, stock pulley etc. i bet with those additions and no cats i would be at 400 rear wheel hp. i have no problems stalling in parking lots thats bs youll be fine if you get it tuned. pm me if you have any questions about it. i also used comp 918 valvesprings which i will practically never have to change. its a great cam and maintenance free!

I think that "idles like crap" may be a good description, if not tuned properly. I wonder why it only has .525 lift like the Hotcam...

Alot of the ASA motors were set up in the past by Lingfelter.

The cam specs are driven by the Showroom stock regulations. The concept was to provide an "affordable series of mods" on a level playing field. Hence sealed engines and reasonably moderate specs.

You can find the ASA specific PCM in the GMPP catalog.

Good luck!

They're fine. Comp 918's would be better.

This is true but it's the program for the ASA Trans Am race cars and it doesn't have a lot of things like ABS so it might now be wise to flash it lock, stock, and barrel.
