Default Build up on valves, disassembled top end...also new cam?

I finally got around to pulling the passenger side head and turbo manifold out.

First off this job is not nearly as hard and I thought it would be, I took my time and did different things different days. In a few hours time I had all the BS stuff out of the way and with a turbo motor, especially the Incon setup there are alot of extra hoses and that to get around.

I did the entire job solo except when it came to lower the manifold, they are heavy and you need one person on top and another on the bottom, but as I found out, you still need one person in the end, assembly will take two.

The passenger side is all taken apart, I just need to pull the head, weather got crappy.

The cylinder walls look great, no scoring of any type, they are almost mirror like.

On the valves I did find an excessive amount of build up on each of the vavles, alot in cylinder 2, a bit in 4, less in 6, and hardly any in 8.

The guy who was over to help me lower the manifold asked me if I had a ring problem, looked like I had oil contamination, I was using 1 quart every 350 miles or so but we always thought that was PCV, the interior of the intake was a bit tacky from oil and when I removed the PCV hose and hung it up on the wall, oil dripped from it about 5 minutes later.

I'll have pic tommorow but the PCV thing sounded right since the build up was heavy in 2 and progressed downward into 8. I'll pull the driveside tommorow and see how it looks.

Everyone said they doubted it was a ring problem, the car made good power all the time, never skipped a beat and when we upped the boost it made more power without an issue.

I thought I had blown a head gasket but the MLS gaskets on the passenger side were in great condition but I thought the problem was on the driver side, find out tommorow.

A HUGE thanks to JMX also, his directions were invaluable and the hardest part of the job was that damned power steering pump, I think its going on the head before I put it in the car

But since I have all this done I've thought of replacing the cam...going with something a bit smaller and more turbo friendly. I honestly do not know the exact size of whats in there, its a reverse split, I want to say .548/.560 and 234/228....again this is from several years ago.

I think other people out there are making more power on the same boost level and I attribute part of it to maybe my cam not being turbo friendly.

The heads are going to get a once over, new springs and that this week. If the cam change is simple I would ask whats is a sure fire bet for a good turbo cam, good mid/high range, redline at 6200.

I've sold my T37's, I'll never make the power they were designed for and I'd like to go more for a more responsive street car so someone with T35's and I are swapping turbo's, so I'll have smaller more responsive turbo's.

Before I would hit 14psi at around 3100rpm at 8.5:1 with the 37's, but see at least 10 lbs by 2800. I'd like to see things spooled up fully by 2800 and maybe see 3/4 of the boost by 2400.

Default Re: Build up on valves, disassembled top end...also new cam?

1qt every 350miles? wow, thats alot of oil there, i had mine engine rebuilt, it wasnt the best job in the world either, spun #6 bearing, the shop took out all pistons and used the old rings that had 79k on them after the block was ohmed, i used 1qt every 850 or so, it finally blew tho, actually last wk, so its getting a brand new LS1 longblock, i wouldnt know what would cause 1qt that often, id check into it, but its hard to say if it doesnt smoke or you cant find it dripping, maybe you have an oil theif
