Default 4* advance, 2* advance, or straight-up?

I've decided on a 208/214, 554/559, 115 cam for my beast. The only thing left to do before I order is decide if I want any advance ground in.

Some relevant specifics of my application:
- 6000 lb truck
- 5.3L (not 5.7L or 6.0L)
- Magnuson Radix @ 6 psi
- 4L65E & stock converter
- stock 3.73 G80 rear end

The truck is my daily driver - I drive like an old man 95% of the time, but the other 5% of the time when I get on it, I want the power to be there.

One cam grinder told me to do +4*...he said all truck cams should be 4* advanced. Another cam guy said the same thing. It wasn't until I talked with a couple of guys here, that some people started saying to install it straight up.

So I am here for advice on the advance issue. The only thing I ask is that if you tell me what you think I should do, please tell me why, so I can understand your reasoning.

Not too big of a cam, plus the blower should net very good low end power straight up. You can try +2,+4 and see what happens, but straight up will work well.

That cam is pretty small so i'd stick with straight up at 115ICL. Advancing a small cam will make it die off too much up top. Shoot the LS6 cam thats 207/217 117LSA is retarded 2* stock. I doubt that you'd ever notice the difference between 0 or +4 anyway. To say "all truck cams should be +4" is just not a good statement. Running it straight up vs. +4 will delay the exhaust valve closing event, which is a good thing when running a SC with a restrictive exhaust(no headers). This is just my opinion, and you know what opinions are like..LOL. You could just go for the middle and do +2.

straight up or retard it a tad IMO, you don't want to run out of steam too early, and you have a blower that will create plently of low end power.

i would either do 0 or 2, 2 will give you more low end power, most cams are ground 2 deg advanced, with the blower i would say go 2 deg since youll want the low end torq, specially on a truck that heavy

I'm talking directly with the manufacturer so this is not an issue.

I would consider 2* retarded. Shouldn't take away too much down low on a cam with tq specs.

Aren't there specific valve timing events one should shoot for on just about any engine? Especially on the intake side?

I can't put in a worthy vote for the degreeing, but I believe the huge cam thread in this section hits upon the subject. I'd get it ground so the valve timing closely matches the ideal specs.

Valve timing events are totally application and displacement specific. Sure I've seen some "ideal" IVO,IVC,EVO,EVC numbers floating around, but again it becomes application specific. Those four numbers are the way a cam should be designed, not by duration, LSA, and ICL.

Marc-are you really pulling out the TR220 for one of those Vinci jobs?

Okay, I started to get more into that thread, and I getcha... It's real interesting stuff.

Yeah, I'm going to try the 210/218 here. I don't think my motor (with lack of mods) is ready for the 220-112. Not to get way off subject, but I towed with it last week and it's not making (noticeably) more power where I'd like it to be.
