Default Questions about head/cam from newbie

Hi,

I am new to this board and a relatively new LS1 owner. I have a 2000 WS6 trans am with a six-speed. The car is basically stock, I have a cutout and an MTI lid. It also has Isky 295 valvesprings and hardened pushrods (the previous owner had a cam in it). Other than that she is stock. I am wanting to get some more power out of it (on a budget) and am considering a head/cam package. I would like to get roughly 450 rwhp and 450 rwtq out of it. My questions are is this possible with a head/cam package and bolt ons? Is this a safe power level for a stock bottom end LS1? Also, what rpm can the stock bottom end handle? I dont plan to do nitrous; I like to have my power on all the time.

I was thinking about a 224/224 0.581/.581 cam, or similar and a set of stage 2 ported LS1 heads. Does anybody have this package? Can you tell me what your power levels are? I would really love to turbo charge the car, but I just can't make than large an investment in it right now. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Pete

Welcome to LS1 Brother hood!!!.....LOL Best bet is to research on this website. I too have been apart of this site for about a month now, and I have learned more than I would ever have thought about. these guys know what they have and talk about most the time...(Not trying to dis anyone)

I too am looking for a Cam swap, and head work. I am going with a 224 cam with an 112 LSA....It's still gonna be my daily driver, but rice beware!!...LMAO...

Hope you find what you are looking for...This is the right spot!!

Probably gonna want to go bigger on the camshaft. That cam would work well with some stg II 5.3l heads. You may not make 450rwhp but you will be well over 400 with a good tune.
Dont get caught up in the dyno number hype.

I have yet to put my car on a dyno. When I do yeah I am hoping for 450 or better. If it doesnt do it. Oh well, it runs damn good at the track!

Keep in mind that with an M6 car with that kind of power you will be needing a 12 bolt or a 9inch rear. That 10bolt will not handle it!!!

What type of numbers could I expect with the head/cam package I listed?

What makes the 5.3L heads better? Are they higher compression?

I do plan on getting a Moser 12 bolt to handle the power. I dont plan to take it to the track much, maybe 5 or 6 times a year.

I just want a fairly streetable package. Its not my daily driver, so I dont mind some lopey idle and stuff, but I dont really want to put a monster cam in it. I am afraid I will lose to much low end and midrange power.

5.3s have a smaller combustion chamber so yes you will make more compression with them.+ more power.

with a 450rwhp/450rwtq goal you dont want a h/c 346, you want a stroker.

with all the bolt ons, 224 cam, a good set of heads you could do ~430rwhp 400rwtq.

Thanks for all the help fellas. Now I am leaning towards a set of 5.3L heads, and a slightly larger cam, maybe around 230/230 duration. Who, besides Patriot Performance, sells the 5.3L heads?

JRP, your right. I would love to have a stroker engine, but its a little out of reach right now. Maybe a few years down the road I will build a turbocharged stroker . That will have more torque than semi.
