Question What is broke under the valve cover?

My friend was at a red light right behind me when the car died. He tried to start it while I was listening under the hood and you can hear something banging against the driver side valve cover and also you could hear a poof, poof like something is forcing air out a hole or something. Kinda like taking off a spark plug and turning over the motor. Any ideas??? He didn't race it the entire night. It is a stock motor with better springs on it and tath is it. It is a 99 with 40k miles on it and had been put back to stock by Speed Demon. It was CySevans car. A 99 Sevan Series T/A. The car prior 3 months before had h/c and headers. Since put back to stock it only has had 2k miles put on it.

See my post about valve reliefs in pistons. Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago; the loud noise was a broken valve spring and the air may be the valve allowing air by. Pull the valve covers and you'll know more. If no spring appears broke, do a compression test or leakdown ( even better ).

double check your springs carefully, and pull your pushrods and check for straighness. if all is well there, may have to do a leakdown test.

I just got back from the car again and we think a rod is broke in one of the cylinders... See post in the texas forum for more info.
