Help with narrowing down "ticking" causes
My car ticks.
Its not a super loud tick but it is noticeable. To some people it sounds normal, to my 9 year old little brother it sounds "like a garbage truck"
I got it dyno'd yesterday and there is no loss in power at high rpms and it seemed to have dyno'd within the range of most cars with similar mods.
The only thing is that I can hear the damn tick. I put in Mobil 15w50 to see if that would help (lifter) and it sounds exactly the same.
My friend seems to think that its the spark plugs but I dont think so. The tick gets louder as the car gets warmer, would this happen if it were the spark plugs or injectors?
I can hear the noise mostly from underneath the car, or when Im park next to other cars. I guess its just the noise echoing off the other cars.
I took it to an exhaust shop and they said I had no exhaust leaks and that my cats were fine. I just need someone to point me in the right direction.
TIA

Seems like it's not uncommon to have a tick noise coming from somewhere around the motor. There was a TSB that was released awhile back about oil pump o-rings.

Might try that first, I personally just decided to live with it.

I got the same thing happening fromn 2 days ago. I got a pretty new motor too (TSP383). Does it sound like its coming from the center of the motor? I was leaning toward a bad lifter myself. Does you car idle ok?

My old cam ticked just like that.
The new one was quiet for weeks, but has started a very light tick every once in a while. It mainly "comes in" about 30 seconds after the motor is initially started.

My car idles fine, but it is a high idle (tach shows 1k)
It sounds more like its coming from underneath the engine, more towards the passenger side.
I have pretty good oil presssure (around 40 psi @ idle) but at this point I would consider anything.
How hard is it to change the oil pump O-ring?

Maybe an exhaust leak? Not sure??? You can check for an arcing spark plug by simply pulling your car in the garage with the lights off and look for the spark jumping. I don't think its in the motor, which is good. If it was the motor the 15w-50 would have changed the tick in some way.

Mine does ... I noticed it and was freaking out about it. I pulled the valve covers and checked everything under there, nothing... I made a stethoscope and found nothing still. Oil pressure is fine, I went out to give it hell, htinking if it's something bad it will get worse, but it didn't. It seems to come and go as it pleases.

Please discribe a ticking noise vs a knocking noise
WS-6_2002 car sounds more like a knocking sound to me, but the oil pressure is good and it idles normal (not very good )
When reading about the oil pump O-ring fix, a symptom is lower oil pressure

Knocking sounds like hitting the block with a hammer.............ticking sounds like tapping on the valve cover with a screwdriver. But thats just my opinion, the point is that a knock is ALOT louder and deeper sounding than a tick. Once you heard both there will be no confusing the two.

Well, the ticking/knocking noise we were hearing, ended up being the crank pully bolting backinging out and the SC pully loosened which was making the noise
So, the bolt was reinstalled with a lot of locktite and we may never get that bolt out again
