Default Pontiac says its a Normal Characteristic.

Ive recently had problems with the reverse in my 02 firehawk. Its been in and out of the shop now several times in the past 6 weeks. Dealer insists the problem is a "normal characteristic" of the manual transmission.

The problem started about 8 weeks ago. Seems all of a sudden the transmission would'nt go into reverse without first puting into first. Otherwise the gears would grind when you let the clutch out. I was told by some here that the syncroniser is most likely the cuase. After another trip to the shop, I was again told its normal, and reverse is NOT syncronised. I KNOW it cant be normal. I had a 99 ramair and never had this problem withit. Ive had this car 2 years and never had this problem before now. Seems it started over night, just one day all of a sudden I went to put it in Reverse and I felt resistance, couldnt force it, so shifted in and out of first and second, then into reverse. Seems thats the only way it will go.

Has anyone experience a similar problem with Reverse?

Sometimes mine does something similar... I go to put it into reverse, and it feels like there's a "stop" there. Basically it just won't go in all the way, just kind of goes in part way and if I let the clutch out thinking it's all the way in, it grinds. When I feel that resistance, I put it back into neutral, take my foot off the clutch, then re-engage the clutch and push it into reverse... it goes in fine when I do that.

There was a few times when I first got my car that I parked it in first instead of reverse, and had a little trouble getting it in reverse. It never grinded though, just had to apply light pressure for a few seconds to get it in. Of course, the manual says to park your car in reverse, so you shouldn't have that trouble

Manual Transmission forum would be the one where you'd be more likely to receive the most helpful responses...
