2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
My '02 z28, a4, 3.23:1 car is using plus or minus 1 quart of oil in 2000 miles. Is this common for an '02 car with the new style rings ? I followed all the typical, probably outdated break in methods that we are all familiar with. It went on mobil 1 at 3000 mi. I feel that this is a little on the high side, should I be concerned ?

Well, I have a 99, not an 02, but I go through about a quart every 4K miles. A quart every 2K sounds a little high to me, no matter what kind of engine it is. Good luck.

I have an 2002 SS and I do not have an oil consumption problem. By the way, your car came from the factory with Mobile 1 already in it.

I go through a quart every 1000 miles or so in my 2001. I'm using Mobile-1 5w30. Maybe I should go thicker?
I'd take it into the dealer for an oil consumption test, but with the bolt ons, heads, cam, and nitrous, I don't think they'd help me out much.

Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 is formulated on the very low end of a 30wt, so that's why it burns more. Try using Mobil 1 0w40, or mix in a quart or two of their 15w50. Or you could also try Amsoil or Redline, both of which are thicker 30wts and tend to burn less than Mobil 1.

Re: 2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
Thanks for everybody's imput. It has 7000 miles on it, perhaps it will tighten with age ??
I will try putting it on conventional oil for a while.
I thought only the super sports had the mobil 1 factory fill. This is the way the sales brochure read ??
I noticed a synthetic oil life study on the net. I think Patman is involved with it. The 2002 Z28 test car seems to be using some oil also.

Re: 2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
Listen to Patman. I used to burn a quart every 3,000 miles in 01 Z28 running Mobil 1 10W-30. I now run Mobil 1 in the following ratio 4 quarts of 10W-30 and 2 quarts of 15w-50 and it fixed my consumption problem. Once the Autozone near me gets the 0W-40 in I'm going to give that a shot at my next oil change to see what kind of impact that has.

Re: 2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
Right now i am running a non synthetic 10W 40 oil during intial breakin with my new 427 ironblock, which now has only 1150 miles on a brand new 6 liter block.
What is the best/heaviest oil weight i should run to help with oil consumption?
Thanks for your input.

How come you would not go any thicker than 10W 40 on my 427 LQ4.

Unless your engine has super huge clearances, 50wt oil is not necessary. And even with engines that may need a 50wt oil, you will find that 10w40 Redline will protect better than a 20w50 conventional oil would, while not losing power like a thicker oil would do.

Re: 2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
My 02 never uses a drop since day 1. Ran Valvoline Durablend for 2 oil changes then went full synthetic. And I have been relentless on it LOL Bottle fed it too
