Default 5.3L motor into f-body... (Reckless / Noone)

since my ls1 block has a nice bay window in it, i was just looking through stuff that would work in the car. with the 6.0L motors, you need to use a 2001+ crank right? is it the same for the 5.3L motors?

Reckless and Noone, i'm pretty sure you two had/have 5.3L motors at some point. What year shortblocks did you end up with?

as for those who are gonna ask why i was looking at these, i figure why not.

Any 99+ 4.8/5.3 block will work. They have the same bore @ 96.01 and are the same physical part. The 5.3 has the same stroke as the LS1, while the 4.8 has a shorter stroke.

For the 6 liter stuff, stay away from 99-00 years that have the iron heads and longer crank.

so for those 99+ 5.3L motors, it's the same stroke, and is it the same crank itself? thanks again

i can find a cheap shortblock. it's cheaper than a 6.0L and cheaper than an LS1 shortblock. You can bore it out to displace the same cubic inch as an LS1 and then you'd have an ironblock motor for nitrous. that is what i was looking into doing.

Not sure which year mine was, but I got it from ARE. I used an LS1 crank in it that was machined and balanced with my internals by ARE also.

Other than that, any 6.0L or 5.3L block will work. Just use an LS1 crank in there and it will work just fine.

Yeah I have a 5.3 block in mine with a stock LS1 crank, works fine.

would it be ok for a nitrous motor then? isn't that 3.905 bore the maximum it can go? so would that be too thin of a cylinder wall for a large shot?

Shaun (VALVEGOD) told me recently that 5.3 for New Trailblazer was aluminum 5.7 block they just dont bore it to 3.900" TO COME UP WITH 5.3 liters.
That is good news for serious boost or nos cars that want thicker cylinders for max endurance!
Leave it to Chevy to use same part for as many applications as possible! Result is many options and lots of availability. None of the dark side oh yeah 4.6 block is one height but 5.4 wont fit! LOL! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" />

You could buy Bill's shortblock and then bore it to 3.905 Chris.

I would go with the iron block. For the extra little bit of money you could get 370ci.
