Default tapping noise when cold start

A buddy of mine has a 2001 SS w/ 60,XXX miles, and also he had some new rings put in under warranty, but anyway my ? is when he does a cold start up its a noticeable tapping noise for a while. When the car warms up it goes away. What could be the problem?

Thanks for looking and shining some light
Joe

I think its the lifters. They are hydraulic and the engine needs to run for a while to build pressure. Or something along those lines.

Wouldn't piston slap be there all the time? If its only on start up I'd bet its the lifters.

Piston slap goes away when the motor warms up. The metal expands taking away the gap.

What kind of oil filter does he use. I've got a pretty bad case of piston slap in my Expedition (I know...it's a Ford...), and depending on the oil filter, it's either barely noticable or VERY apparent. I had always used K & N oil filters, and the piston slap could only be noticed (just barely) on the coldest (sub zero) mornings. I had to buy a Fram UltraGuard whatever in a pinch, and it sounded like my engine was going to destroy itself. Something about crappy ADB valves in Frams....Anyway, back to the K&N, and it's all but gone.

this is interesting, can anybody else say that oil filters have made a difference?

Dam if its really piston slap he is going to be devastated. I hope its just the lifters. Is there a way to check if it is piston slap or lifters. Thanks for the replies guys.

Piston slap has not caused the problems you'd think it would, from what I've read here. If it is, don't be too crushed.
