Default What size hole? TB blade (G5X3/114 cam)

Hello, I am continually having idle problems once she warms up :*****: Once I shut her down and start her back up again she hunts for an idle for about 5-7 seconds before she kicks in. MTI of Houston who did the tune, drilled a 7/32 hole in the TB blade however asked for me to contact LG to see if they were drilling a larger hole for the G5X3 cam. I have contacted them, and they told me they now try to aviod drilling a hole in the blade, and keep trying to adjust the IAC. They could not tell me what size hole because it is subjective he told me. Lou was busy, so I could not talk to him directly Other than the "hot start" problem, I have no driveabilty issues other than minor bucking under low rpms. My car has been back to MTI 2 times driving from Florida, and PCM mailed 2 times, for adjustments with no success. I will give Jayson credit though once I drove back the second time (because of Hurricane Ivan), I thought my problem was solved because around Houston she did not act up once he made adjustment. As soon as I return to Florida, the problem was back! Jayson told me a cam with these specs is never going to idle perfectly Has anyone else experience problems such as mine? The only other mods I have are the following: Kooks headers, hi-flo cats, x-pipe, blackwing, Breathless intake, and GHL exhaust. Please help!

I was told by LG not to go larger than 1/4 inch with the G5X2. I drilled a 7/32 inch I believe.

An alternative to drilling is just to crack open the tb a little with the set screw.

Although I never tried it, I was told by LG that messing with the idle screw could throw off(confuse) the TPS (throttle position sensor).

I tried drilling and it didnt help much...the IAC will just compensate and you are back to where you started.

What I did was turn the TB set screw up a little bit. It is an allen/star headed screw and it is right under the throttle stop. Turn it up about 1 full turn. DONT GET GREEDY! Now unplug your TPS sensor on the driver's side of the TB shaft. Turn the ignition ON but do not start. What 10-15 seconds. Turn ignition OFF. Plug the sensor back in.

Now the computer will use this TPS signal as idle, even though TB will be open just a little. I set my idle to ~600-650 in my automatic this way. I have the TR224-114 with a 3500 stall converter. It always used to die when in gear at a stoplight, now it drives perfect....no stalling...no surging....just like stock.

Set the idle in small steps. If it is still too low at 1 turn, turn it up another 1/4 turn, unplug sensor, key on for 15 seconds, key off, plug in...recheck idle.

I also drilled my TB a little...I believe it was 3/16...I benefitted more from the TPS procedure.

I wondered the same with my problem. But I have the 90mm Fast TB. Was thinking of drilling the TB to help idle properly! You can see my cam in sig and I have a A4!

That's the way I did it and it helped a lot to get my iac counts down.

I remember drilling out the TB hole when I had a TR230 in my 99. Funny thing was when the car went back to stock, I had to replace the TB because the car idled @ 1800rpms.

Don't drill the TB, adjust the IAC table. I've made huge cams idle like stock this way.

You can get it to idle no problem, but the issue is the fact that most tuning with drivability is done warm. It is inconsistent to say the least and nothing with cold starts which makes it tough to nail the tune. I have gone a 1/4" hole on my personal car, but this was the days before Edit and good tuning.

If this helps- the Idle set screw is a torx- T15 to be exact

Because of drilling my TB we cannot get my car to idle perfectly on cold start. Really it just caused a minor surging at idle. The tuner should be ablke to get it to idle. Maybe you idle speed is too low. I'd expect at least 850 RPMs with that cam. Probalby more like 900.

There are two different blade part numbers, 70125 and 79651. The 79651 has a larger hole in it from the factory. Carb guys have been drilling butterflies for years with good turn out. Draw back is like said earlier about going back stock.

Man I just tried the adjustment of the TB. Major improvement. I couldn`t keep the car running. I just got back from taking a ride around town. Granted I need to take it back to MTI for the tune. She was tuned surging pretty bad. And for some reason I can manually down shift and she rocks. But when I have her in drive she won`t downshift on her own.Do ya`ll think the TPS isn`t seeing 100% throttle to tell the computer to downshift? Tranyy runs sweet manually. So I know the tranny is okay. What do you think the problems is fellas!

I have tried everything with mine. It runs great after it warms up, but will not idle at all cold. It takes about 2 minutes before it will idle. I thought about going back to the stock TB to see what happens.
