Thanks for the help guys, I'll continue saving up for that cam swap then. Next in line will probably be a 12 bolt with 3.73's

Forget the 3.73s and get 4.11s or 4.56. Going from 3.42 to 3.73 with an M6 is not nearly enough IMO.

Default Need gears before cam?

I just got off the phone with one of the reps from Thunder Racing, since I'm looking for a cam to buy. I'm torn between the 224/224 .561/.561 114 LSA and the 224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA cam. I'm kind of leaning towards the 112 LSA. Anyways, the rep told me that I should get a set of gears before I get a cam, because these cams like the upper rpms and it'll feel like it's taking forever to get up there. Is he right? Should I go with a set of gears first, then a cam? I really don't want to do a set of gears because I plan to do a 12-bolt down the road, so I would wasting my money in a way. What do you guys think?

I had the opportunity to drive a friend's car for a while. Identical to mine, except for rear gears. 6-speed, cam (his: TR224, mine, MTI B1), longtubes, no cat, bolt ons.

I had 4.10 gears in a 12-bolt, his had 3.42's.

His felt quick, but after being used to mine, his felt lazy from a punch on the highway (going 70 and drop it in to 3rd). So yes, you will gain power with a cam, so if you want to do a cam, just do it. But it *really* wakes up when you do gears.

I pulled the 4.10's and am now running 4.56's. I like them even better. 3rd is just that much more fun on the highway now.

Of course, my friend's car has been sitting for the last 6 weeks because he blew up his 3.42's at the strip on Nittos. Mine's Moser equipped, and laughs at 6k RPM clutch dumps.

I drive a 99 WS6 with very large cam (almost unstreetable). Right now my car has 3.23 gears in it and it seems like it sleeps untill about 4,000 RPM. I have a set of 3.73 gears i will be installing in a few weeks, but you can drive on stock gears with a large cam.

I dont think that you need gears before a cam.

I think you just need gears, period .

Unless you are racing 140mph+ on the highway, gears are the biggest bang/buck out there, IMHO.

Do it in either order, since the cam likes 4.10s, and the 4.10s like cams.

Then the cam/4.10s are going to like headers, and then .... the real trouble begins.

Gears for the cam eh??

Then I must be NUTZ!

In a few weeks in going with a Comp 224/224 .581
In an A4...with... 2.73's!!!
(Getting MAC headers as well)
EDIT: This is in the 98..

Believe it or not.. I still like my lil 2.73's
The car right now has run a 12.70 on em with the mods listed below.

I figure I'll keep running em. After all, they thicker and less suseptible to breakage...

Hmmmm.. I wonder what the new setup will do at the track....

Thunder recommended a 4600 stall and 410 gears before my TR230/224 also. I just told them it isn't in the budget right now so give me the cam!

You don't NEED gears but they will allow you to get the most from the cam.
