Default *BIG PROBLEM* Cam gear doesn't fit on Cam!

Anyone else have this problem? I had bought a 225 test cam from TSP awhile back and am in the middle of a heads and cam swap as we speak! I then realized after trying to install the cam gear (stock 2000 Vette) that the gear nipple (for lack of a better term) does not fit into the hole of the gear! I am wondering if it woud be ok if I took it to a machine shop and had them fit it in with it being compared to the fit of the gear over the stock cam. I know the gear is really important and was wondering if this would be the thing to do. The stocker seems to fit right in as did my old T1 cam in my Camaro.

By the way, TSP is closed on weekends and I just left them a message. I am wondering if the car they had this on had an aftermarket gear (if the gear had a larger hole) since the cam has clearly been used before. They are a good bunch of guys and I am not bashing here, just looking for some opinions as I need this car to go out of town early nest week.

Derek

You mean the cam end nipple doesn't fit the cam gear hole?
Enlarge the gear hole.

exactly. I was thinking of machining the cam nipple rather than drilling the gear because I would think the drilling may weaken the gear?
Thanks for the quick reply.

It will not weaken cam gear. The nipple is merely there to relieve tension on cam bolts.

hey guys...the "nipple" is called a dowel pin...its just a tight fit i bet...machine the gear...the pin is harder to do cause its small, round, & hard *** steel

try some emry cloth around the pin and thru the hole to see if that helps

I actually remember installing that test cam, I had to hone the timing gear out ever so slightly for some reason with that camshaft. I've had to also do that with some Cloyes timing sets also back before we started using rollmaster.

OK, got the gear on some time ago. I just had to clean out the f\gear a little as well as the cam dowel as well and it was a tight fit. I am installing the heads now and hope to crank it up later tonight.

Thanks all for your quick replys! This sight rocks!

The same thing happened to me just the other day with a Rollmaster gear and Comp Cam (my stock gear didn't fit either). I drilled the hole a fraction bigger using a drill press.
