Question ??? Iron Block and Aluminum Heads, ISSUES ???

I come from a time when these combinations were fraught with problems. How about now?????

No flames please.... I guess I am quoting my life experiences in the Mustang world with iron 302s and aluminum heads....

Obviously, the co-efficient of iron and aluminum are different and the expansion and contraction rates vary proportionally. I am wondering what the longevity of these setups are on the street with stop and go driving in a daily commute......

I have personally seen 2 LT1 engines in need of head gaskets (both stock engines) before 100k miles. I believe the torque to yield bolts are a definite improvement in sealing and gasket life, but you still have different expansion rates/sizes between iron and aluminum. Given nearly the same heat cycles, I would forsee having problems with iron/aluminum combo sooner than aluminum/aluminum combo. Now, some aftermarket head gaskets may be better at maintaining the seal; not real sure about that. Thats just my 2 cents.

I am seeing a log of iron and aluminum combos now adays. Look at all of the new GM trucks. They all have an iron block and aluminum heads. I would think they are not having any problems. My budys truck has 150k on it right now it is an 01 6.0 iron block Aluminum heads. He has all bolt ons for the truck, Headers, TB, I think UDP, it is holding up good. You also have to remember that the ls1 is an iron sleved block.

While I certainly don't think it is ideal, there are some smart enginerds that figured out how to make this combo work, and it has worked pretty well. If I had the money, and wanted a big cube motor, I'd personally get an LS2 block, and if not, have the LS1 block resleeved. If I was on a budget, you can't beat the price of an iron block with a stick.

i blew the head gaskets on my lt1 before 100k........there will always be more of a chance to blow a gasket between two different metals, but they've got the gasket size/material and the tolerances for head/block surfaces down to nothing now........as long as you don't overheat your combo you should be fine

When my shortblock goes, a 6.0 liter iron one is going in! I'll make up for the weight with an AC delete or something, LOL.

whats funny is cars have been pumped out of factorys with just that combination of head/block material for 30+ years.....yet it might be different with an ls1?
