Default 02 LS6 Springs good for .570 lift???

When I did a search, I found some people saying the 02 LS6 springs are only good to .550 lift but then others say the springs are good to .570 and reference some other sites that shows this:

http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...1981&pid=90925

Money is tight right now and I'd rather pay $85 for new LS6 springs than $179 for 918's. These springs will only be on for temp as I will eventually get some AFR's in a year or so.

My cam is a Comp 224/222 568/566 114

Has anyone here had problems with 02 LS6 springs on bigger cams???

The problem isn't necessarily with the lift, it's with the ramp rates of other after market cams... a Comp Cam will have more aggressive ramps than an OEM cam like the LS6, and would stress the valve springs more. Also, since the lift would be borderline with what the LS6 springs could handle, adding in faster ramps would pretty much spell doom for those springs.

If money is tight, I suggest keep saving until you can do it with the bare minimum of the right parts... meaning cam, appropriate valve springs, and hardened pushrods.

does anyone know if the ramp rate on the hotcam is ok for ls6 springs? i know it comes in the kit...but are the springs stressed to the max with that cam?

No, the LS6 springs compliment the Hot Cam well...

Wouldn't this cam ramp faster than mine:

SDPC Part Number: 88958606
Manufacturer: GM Performance Parts
Advertised Duration Int. : 294
Advertised Duration Exh. : 306
Duration @ 0.050" (I/E) : 239 / 251
Lift (I/E) : 0.570 / 0.570
Lobe Separation : 106
RPM Range : 4000-7000
Cam Type : Hydraulic Roller
This hydraulic roller camshaft is designed by the GM Racing Division for road racing applications in the Grand-Am series. Serious duration and lift will require that the piston to valve clearance be checked as well as major PCM modifications. For best torque, install the intake centerline 105 for best power install at 107. GM recommends lightweight valves and valve springs from the 2002-03 LS6 engine for use with this camshaft.

Thats the cam they list in the above link and they suggest using the LS6 springs.

I know the 918 springs are usually the way to go but if they can use that cam with those springs not have any issues then I thought they would okay for my cam.

The key in their recommendation is the lightweight valves that are in the LS6 as well... those help lower the stress of the valvetrain. Since you have the heavier LS1 valves, you shouldn't go over a .550 lift or so with the LS6 springs.

Also, that cam doesn't show anything about ramp rates... an OEM cam (which that one is since it's build by GM) will have slower ramps. I'm guessing while that cam is large, the ramps are slower like the Hot Cam.

Read some of the multitudes of posts here... it's best not to go with something that might barely work, it's best to go with something that will be completely safe. Believe me, spending an extra $100-$200 is far better than spending an $2000+ to fix an engine that was pretty much destroyed by a valve spring that was too stressed for the cam it was running.

Thanks Tranzor! I totally agree with you about spending the extra cash and be on the safe side. I guess I'll start looking for the 918's.

Any ideas on sponsors that has them cheaper?

just curious about ramp rates... wouldn't the LS6 cam have fast ramps, since it has .551 lift with ONLY 204 duration?? TR cams have fast ramps, and their 220 cam has only .553 lift... just wondering...
