Default Help!! Reading that MTI H/C thread, now I have a question?

My new heads are 5.7 RMS stageII (2.02/1.55) shaved thirthy thousands (.30) and my cam will be 227/235 .595.605. Please tell me that I'll have enough Piston to valve clearance. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> Raging Motorsports said I'll be fine (and dont get me wrong, I trust them) but a second opinion is always welcome. If it matters, I'm using GM head gaskets, and ARP head studs.

Either clay it or put it together on the stand and roll ot over slowly by hand to see if it is smooth or stops!

Well the stand idea is great, but this is all getting installed while motor is in the car. Just spin the crank by hand when all done and see if it is smooth. I kinda wanted an answer of YES, but this is honest enough <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Thanks

That's a sizeable cam. You'll definately need to check your clearance. Your cam's ICL (intake center) and if you have the cam installed advanced or straight up will both make a difference in clearance. If it's too close, you can advance it a little to be in the clear with an adjustable timing set.

At the very least, make sure you HAND TURN over the motor and make sure you don't hit any resistance before you first fire it up.

I would clay it just to be safe so you know how close you are cutting it. If it is too close you may have to look into other measures to keep a safe amount of clearance. Also make sure your pushrods are correct length with a checker and that your springs are going to hold up with your cam. I had .078 cleanrance and still nicked mine because my springs sucked. And my cam is only 223/.589/112

The advice your getting here is excellent. No choice but to check out piston to valve clearance b/f finalizing your project as that's an aggressive cam your running and better to be safe than sorry.

Well.. you're cutting it VERY VERY close. I had a 228/234 in my old motor and it grenaded the motor on heads that were milled .030 (thirty thousandths), and I didn't have near that much lift.

What you have to take into account is that the motor may not hit as soon as you fire it up, or even when you're checking it with clay. You have to allow yourself roughly .080 of clearance. While that seems like a lot, you have to remember how hot the metals are getting and how much things are going to expand.

If I were you I'd definitely check it, since rotating the motor really won't tell you ****.
