Default VERY high oil pressure... what happened?

At idle, the gauge is reading around 50 psi, and under normal acceleration is around 60 or more. WOT, it goes to 80 and pegs the gauge.

I just noticed this when I was pounding on it a little. The car was sitting for about 2 hours before I did this (engine wasn't entirely cold). I decided to do a little clutch dump and it bounced off the limiter a few times. I nailed 2nd and that's when I noticed the needle pegged. The engine has 25k miles on it.

Should I even be driving it?

Please help me out!

Hmm, I have a 2k T/A w/64k miles and mine sits @ 47psi on normal cruising. Jumps well into the 65-70psi range @ WOT, but only stays around 60 under normal accel.

I'd let her sit for a little while, cool down completely and then start her up and warm up. Go for a cruise and if it repeats those numbers, you might have an oil pump thats on its way out the door. ESP101 can hook you up with an LS6 pump for cheap if thats the case.

I've got a G5X3 sitting in my basement for the spring, and I was going to throw in a ported LS6 pump anyway. Guess I'll just have to get the car done sooner than I though

Any other comments/ideas?

I just went out again and just let it sit and idle. It's at 60psi just sitting there now...

Doesn't seem like a real problem I ported mine and it idles at about 65 and it regualarly pegs the gauge. All it is doing is sucking some of your HP. As long as you don't loose your oil presure etc...

What makes you think that higher than normal oil pressure is indicative of eminent pump failure? I would look elsewhere for the source of this so called "problem".

I just thought it idled at around 40 and was that low under normal accelleration.

Hell, maybe I had low oil pressure before.

Mine stays at 55 at idle and about 75 at WOT, it started after installing the ported TSP LS6 pump.

well, i noticed mine went from idling at around 40-42 to around 45-47 now ever since i installed my new oil pan. its a stock pan, i just punctured my old one. i dunno why my pressure went up. however, i do remember unhooking the sensor on the side of the pan while i was changing it but im hoping that would read correct even though i had it out for a short time period.

Seems like a really good reason to install that X3 and ported pump a little earlier than anticipated...

One day I noticed mine was higher than normal and has stayed that way for about a month now. Was like 35-38 at idle up to 60+/- at WOT. Then it started running 43-50 idle and up to 75+/- at WOT. It scared me so even though I had changed the oil less than 1k miles before I changed it again and have sense put 500 miles on it and its settled down a little to 40+/- at idle and 65-70 at WOT. Not sure why it changed all the sudden; so If you find out something please let me know. For now I have just decided it's ok, but in the back of my mind it has me conserned a little.

Is there a relief valve on the oil pump? Like, could the spring that decides how much oil gets pumped before recirculating back into the pump have gotten some debris behind it which would cause it to pump more than normal - causing the higher pressure? If there was a relief valve, we could simply lower the pressure, correct?

Does any of that make sense, or do I have no clue what I'm talking about?
