IIRC, the General wanted to use a larger base circle cam; and since there is no need for the (larger diameter) cam to be solid, it is hollow.
At least that's what I think I remember. Of course, I could be completely full of crap, too...

Reduces mass without reducing strength.I believe it increases Stiffness also.Maybe some of the Engineers can help us out here. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

It is all about mechanics. Same theory as an I-beam being just as strong as a solid brase. In a camshaft it reduces rotating mass wihtout compramising strength.
