Default Can you cut a valve relief .060 deep in a stock piston and not cause problems?

Just want to make sure it's not going to weaken the piston dome to the point of potential problems.

Yes you can go that deep, and yes it will weaken the piston to a point. People have gone as deep as .100 without problems, most go to .075 or so safely.

Mine are about 0.090" and I've had no trouble in a couple dozen passes in the bottom 11s at over 120.

SOME of mine are .100 and I've had them that way for 10,000 miles without a problem. Cut those bitches and don't worry about them.

Timberwolf, I would say its only smart to consider your combination. If you need to cut .100 and your trying to spray a 200 shot on a stock bottom your not playing it safe, more like roulette. .060" and NA "shouldn't" be a problem....operative word is shouldnt. Remember all the parts to these engines are cast, hyperuetectic etc so there may be some flaw in the materials as well causing one person who cuts a .060" to break a piston. Just a thought, not trying to scare you or anyone. Just the old saying, what works for one person may not work for you.

Good luck.

No worries at all. The portion of the piston where you cut is thick.

I have 0.125 and 0.100 with no problem. I was told that was the maximum recomended by GM on some of the racing series that use the LS1 engines.

ok, sounds like I should be safe. I'm running 653 lift on 5.3 heads, so I am guessing I am going to need between a .060 and .080 cut in them

.090" here but haven't run it yet. Looks like I'll be safe from what has been said here.

Max lift will not tell you anything about how much you need to cut. Lift at TDC will tell you how much.

I can make a 500 lift cam not fit in a stock LS1.

What kind of lobe are you talking about? I run a .651" lift 239 duration LSK comp lobe. Like Louis said, without the rest of the specs nothing will be known about your p/v clearence.
