Cam gurus help me choose a cam...
For my daily-driven 2004 C5. I have never had a cammed car before, so I would like to find one that I can drive no with no or almost no problems. My car has zip-tie mod and Corsa cat-back atm, but Kooks headers w/o cats are going in soon. Car also came stock with ls6 intake, as you all know. I want to keep my stock gears if at all possible, but I would also like some good power gains. I was thinking 380+ rwhp with cam only and bolt-ons? If the drivability issue is something I could get used too, then I wouldn't mind going with a "bigger" cam to get to my goal of 400+ rwhp with only a cam. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

First of is your car automatic or manual? That will have a huge effect in determining the driveability of whatever cam you get. Without knowing offhand, I could recommend Thunder Racing's TR224 or TSP's Custom 225/225. Those would put you at your 380 rwhp mark. However, driveability, with a good tune should be great with a bigger cam and you have many choices with those. I recommend a Futral/FMS F11 or F13 if you want to go that route. Great power under the curve, through the whole range of RPM's, and nice peak numbers. I'd recommend my cam, but it may be a little big for what you want. Best of luck and if you have any more questions, let me know.

Stay smaller than what most folks in here are telling you. Most fellers in here are thinking of getting another 1/10 at the strip than just ballin' around out in the world.
Call MTI, Thunder *and* especially Comp for suggestions. No penalties for doing lotsa research. I do know that Comp will be the more disciplined in their response. To them, durability and reliability are more important than a one-Summer-I-busted-the-record dyno run.

A guy I know just pulled 405rwhp with a 226/226 through mid length Mac headers. https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamometer-results-comparisons/261461-got-car-dynoed-other-day.html
I'd get at least that big, or even go up to a 228/228 or 230/230. The TR224 is a proven cam, but I see alot of members who end up wanting to go bigger after they have it.

I'm going with a FMS cam called the F10, 228/228 .576/.576 on a 112lsa. I hear the FMS cams will net you close to 400rwhp and stil have a good streetable car. I'll be getting mine next week so I'll let you know how it runs soon, hopefully

Even though I'm pulling the TR224 out, its got my vote for what your looking for. Great all around cam. Runs, idles, and sounds good... plus I got it to pass emissions(IM240). I've been running it with Comp 918s, TR hardened pushrods, stock retainers and stock rockers for two years without a problem.

Just to show you what kind of $$ you will be spending, I bought my 224 cam used from a member on here for $210 and I purchased 918s, TR hardened pushrods, and gasket kit all from Thunder Racing for $312 shipped. All that is left now is HPTuners, and if you can find someone to go in halves with you, you can get that for around $250. You can now get two vehicle/model years for $500...

224 gets my vote for you as well. will give you gobs of usable power down low, and won't require new springs every year, although its still good to check them that often. call Thunder Racing, TSP and FMS and talk to them about cams. I think it will be a common consensus to stay @ a 228 duration cam or less for your goals.

I'm going to jump in with the TR224 as well. It makes good power and it's a very good for a daily driver. Mine has served me well for many many miles but it's time for me to go bigger. I'm going with the F-13. If you really want some detailed info on cams call Allan Futral (Futral Motorsports), the man is a cam guru. He will definitely put you on the right track.
