Default Pen magnets not pulling out of pushrod hole?!?!

So, I'm in the middle of my very first LS1 cam swap. I inserted a pen magnet into the pushrod hole to keep the lifter up. When I went to remove the magnet it was getting caught up in the hole. It took my a few minutes, a bunch of different angles and a lot of horrible images of having to remove the heads, before it came out.

Is this NORMAL!?!?! This was the only magnet I inserted and it was at the front of the engine. I can't imagine hoe hard it would be to remove all 16, especially the ones in the back, if they are all the hard to remove...

Any pointers?

yea man that seems pretty normal the magnets have to come out just the right way or else they will kind hang on the lip, but just pull soo hard that you break the tip off.

just wiggle them a little, also check each one carefully before putting them in the pushrod holes, some of the magnets were loose on mine and if it fell off in the pushrod hole you would be in nightmare city!

You could poor a little oil down each one to help make them slide out a little better.

If you turn the motor over a few times with the rocker arms off the pushrods should all be sticking straight up anyway since the lifters would be up as well.

I've never heard of anybody pulling pushrods out of a motor with a magnet.

haha.... not really. They're just different. It's probably one of the easiest motors to work on though. Anyway.... here's what you do. Pull all of the rocker arms off.

Then, pull all of the pushrods out (by hand).

Make sure that the cam is exposed and ready to come out. Turn the motor over about 4 or 5 times to make sure all of the lifters are up. Then slide the cam out, just be careful when you do it so that you don't clip any of the lifters and have them drop into the pan.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully I'll probably finish this thing up tomorrow (stuck in work today)

Thanks again.

Well the cam is in, and the magnet trick worked great! (Except some were a real bitch getting out....)

Hopefully I am going to do the springs tomorrow (waiting on valvestem seals from the dealer...)

There's a plastic piece down in there that the lifter slide up in. I can see the pen magnet getting caught in that maybe. I've never tried that myself, but I could see that happening.

I was beginning to pack my bags to take a trip "nightmare city" when the magnet wasn't coming out last night!
