Stock LS6 oil pump...Better thana stock LS1 unit?
I am getting ready to do a cam change on my 98 SS. I know the 98's are prone to oil pump failure. Luckily I have managed 84,000 miles and no problems.
What I would like to know is...
What is the difference between an LS1 and an LS6 oil pump if any? I know most vendors carry the Ported LS6 item.
But for only $60 I think I can live with the stock LS6 unit. How much psi is really needed? If you have too much isn't it possible to pump the oil pan dry or low before the oil gets back down to the pan?

They are the same. Any pump you order will have the same part number, although they might have made improvements since your car was built.

For my use, I install a 150/1000ths (or 1/8" works fine) shim in the pressure spring cap. Helps boost pressure a little, helpful for track cars to maintain pressure as temps get high.

I also have a 98 with 100,000 miles and the oil pump has been fine. I've owned it since day one. I just ordered a LS6 oil pump for mine. Going in next weekend. Just taking precautions.

They have made some minor ajustments to it just like they do ever year to help out with longevety(sp) of the pump.
Shimming the pump is not always the best. They way i see it is, it is not the PSI that you want it is the flow. Like what would be better 100psi out of a 1/8hole or 50psi out of a 1in hole. PSI is a mesure of restriction not volume.

Nothing else compares.
Never deal with Oiling issues again! The pump is designed with a gerotor designed to displace more than 15% more oil than the original GM design. A 2mm thicker gear rotor compared to the factory rotor. The relief spring installed in the pump is designed to increase the internal by-pass pressure setting an additional 10 psi. An additional spring is supplied which will reduce the internal by-pass pressure back to original settings. The pump design has also been improved by reducing flow restriction. In addition, pump materials have been changed to improve performance and durability. These changes improve the pump’s efficiency resulting in better performance especially during priming and at low rpm. This is not a ported oem pump. Brand new cast pump that will out performane any ported factory unit!.
