Cam or rearend first
I have the mod bug right now and was wondering if it would be wise to get a 12 bolt with 3.73's before a cam, also would the gearing hurt me that much if I did a cam first? I'm rolling on 2.73's.
I don't have a cam picked out yet but I will shortly any advice would help too.
I'm a wannabe gearhead

Cam first. Wait until you blow up the 10 bolt.
besides... a cam will not hurt an A4's rear....
there's a guy ED making 500+ rwhp with a STOCK 10 bolt in an A4 car....
if it isnt broke.......... you know the rest.

Anyway is there a good web site to learn about the specs of a cam and what they mean. I went to how stuff works on the web and all it showed was how the cam interacts with the valves.
I try and go to the track at least once a month and I do use drag radials so the rear will eventually go boom, after I Finally got well into the 12's it doesn't seem fast enough so now I want to get in the 11's and the cam seems like the best option .

Ben, here is a great guide that will explain most of what you'll want to initially know about camshafts. after you've read this a few times(I've read it three times myself just to make sure I've picked up everything) search and read up!! there have been a cornicopia of "what cam should i get?" posts in the past six months, so many in fact that many of your questions about the popular cams are probably answered already out there. once you get a good idea about a few cams throw up a post with some questions and we'll help ya out!!!
and concerning the rear end, while the a4's don't abuse them nearly as much as m6s do(what I have), still get ready to swap it out eventually. i put a moser 9" in over the weekend, has a full spool in it, damn near bulletproof rear end. i went from 3.42's to 3.89's and it was a fun jump. i can't imagine what it'd be like from 2.73's!!

I believe in building a solid platform before adding the power but in this case you're alright cause you have an A4. Your not going to brake the 10 bolt anytime soon with the auto so you can stand to gain some power. I would do a cam and gears first. You'd be amazed what a set of gears can do for your car to really wake it up.

STALL or STALL + CAM > GEARS
The big question you will have is:
Do you go with the cam you will want eventually when you get gears, or
something a little moderate to work better with what you have now????
Don't worry about the 2.73 gearset. It can't be broken, believe me, I've
been trying....

Yeah, but would a big streetable cam with a good tune be that much better than a middle of the road cam with a good tune since I have the shitty 2.73's.

i would reccomend the rear end firts if you are going to be running sticky tires. You can get away with a lot of HP on a 10 bolt daily driving, but the first time you take it to the track with some big stickys, BOOM, clunk clunk clunk is what you are going to hear. I would also reccomend doing the rear first because once you start with the HP mods you wont want to quit with them. Thats just my opinion though!
