Done a few sets! Ya have to do a set or two before ya get good at it learn all the techniqes and read up on and look at work other people has done. Ya know whats got to be done if ya take a good look at a set of heads that have been ported by a pro at a speed shop! Usually ya might get 20hp plus with a decent home done port job with the stock valves.

See if the search button is workin and search "home head porters" or "home ported heads". Lots of info on this subject- some I have posted in- and just search and read. Good luck with your venture.

Depending on what they charge to port cylinder heads, most charge $150-$200 for the machine work but the port work would be something that is not so easily priced by guessing. If you plan on doin it your self go ahead and consider a whole weekend(16-20 hours) to do the port work or do not even think about doin it.

Dont throw your efforts on something that you r not sure about its results , aluminium heads r sensitive to port and mill , grap your money and discover the real results.

As cheap as you can buy stock LS1 heads, grab some, research and port them, have them flowed. You have got to learn sometime, just do your research measure twice, cut once. Our shop starts at about $400 and up, way up. Good luck!

Unless you know what you're doing (in which case you wouldn't be asking the question) you will more than likely deterioate the performance on a set of stock heads. To do it right, you need a flow bench and some other specialozed tools. Most of which will cost you more than the cost of a nice set of aftermarket heads.
Now I'm not saying don't do it or that anybody doing their own is an idot, I'm having a friend do a set for me as I type, but he's been doing heads his whole life (most of it) and has specialized tools to flow the heads, find high pressure areas in the runners, hone the valve guides, perform a mutli angle valve job...and on and on. Now he learned by diving in to his first set of heads and having success and failure, if you look at it from that perspective, you can buy a set of used LS1 heads for $150-$200 and go in and clean em up and you might make a little more power. It's a ton of labor though to be pulling heads on and off in an F-body just for a few horsepower.
Personally, if I had the time and a better setup, I think it would be fun.
Well, I hope that covers both sides of the issue
