It's Cam decision time
Well it's officially cam time for the old black SS. She has eclipsed 36,000 miles and is "ITCHING" for a new bump stick
Here is what I'm working with. Car is daily driven about 60 miles/day. I'm looking for good reliable power (NA and on the juice) without having to sacrifice on the driving manners too much.
I've found a good deal on two different cams, so these are the ones that I'm comparing. Both are brand new:
In the red corner:
Crane cam (VHP 055) The "boss"
216/224 .551/.551 113
Overlap 57
Crane 1.8 ratio adjustable rocker arms
Crane Dual springs with Ti retainers
In the blue corner:
Crane Cam (VHP 048)
224/228 .551/.551 116
Overlap 55
Crane 1.8 ratio adjustable rocker arms
Crane Dual springs with Ti retainers
So what kind of power and driving manners am I looking at with either of these two and the 1.8's (car is an M6)?
Also an ASP under drive pulley will be installed at the same time, Other mods are in my sig.
Thanks

VHP 048 if your wanting to get an off the shelf cam. Agree with the 1.8 vs 1.7 ratio. No real need for a higher ratio rocker, unless you want that extra lift, then I would have a cam ground custom for your overall specs.

Maybe a Better Deal?
I saw a dealer on ebay are selling any LS1 Comp Cam for $320 which isn't too bad of a deal. You can get a custom grind with any of Comp's lobe profiles, on any LSA and get it in about a week directly from Comp Cams! Is your deal much better than that?
Remember that the higher ratio rockers give 1-2 more degrees of effective duration than the 1.7 ratio rockers. That is because the valve reaches same .085 open dimension at .047" tappet lift instead of .050".
A few standard Comp grinds are:
222/224 @112LSA .566/.568 featuring high lift lobes. .599/.601 w/1.8 ratio
216/220 @114LSA .525/.532 utilizing standard lobes. .556/.563 w/1.8 ratio

What horsepower do you think that I'll make with the 055, the 1.8's and the ASP pulley?
My latest numbers are 354 hp 367 Tq.
I'm guessing 15hp with the rockers and 20hp with the cam and 5hp with the pulley. Which puts me really close to 400hp give or take a few. Am I way off with such a "small" cam?
Thanks

you may not get the horsepower number you are looking for. but, it's the entire change in the curve that'll be most noticed. especially in the torque area. here's what happened to the wife's car with the 1.8 accelerated lift rocker kit.
dyno 9 before
dyno 11 500 miles later
dyno 14 8 months later

The S-cam (238/242- .608/612 - 115 LSA ) is a lot bigger than he is looking for considering the specs he listed.
I agree the 055 seems better suited to your current mods and your DD needs..

That S-cam looks like it will be way too big for me right now. I'm leaning towards the 055 but I'm still not 100% sure yet.
Mrr23, what kind of numbers would you expect for me to see with the 055 cam, rockers and pulley? Also what would you expect the torque to be at?
