Default Lookn For Advice and Input For a Trex Cam and LS6 Head Combo

I bought a set of 2001 ls6 heads that I plan on using with the Trex cam. I am thinking about milling the heads to get 11:1 compression. How hard is it to notch the pistons for clearance? How much compression can you run with 93 octance pump gas? I have 100 octane available just incase. I figure I could run conservative timing for 93 and bump it up with 100.

As far as the trex cam what timing chain and springs should I get? I plan on setting the rev limiter to 7200. Should I get new lifters and retainers? Since the heads will be off it shouldnt be a problem to install. Motor has 85k miles. I plan getting a new oil pump as well. I am lookn at the Katech ported ls6 pump.

Another thing I plan on upgrading is the rod bolts. I have read about people changing them withthe motor in the car without problems. I read that changing the bolts might make the rods slightly out of round but people seem to get away with it. Looks like the ARP's bolts are the most popular but the Katechs have the same weight as stock. Has anyone used the Katechs?

I dont plan on the motor living forever but Id be happy with one season of racing. When it pops I will just build up a 402 or 427.

What headers would you guys recommend? Maybe some stepped 1 7/8" headers?

You could probably make a better choice on the cam. I haven't seen any head/cam dyno graphs from the TRex that are any better than the smaller cams' graphs.

Yeah, I was also thinking of going with the TSP MS3 cam. Or even staying with the cam I got.

you can go pretty high in compression before you need to get super fuel. I have 5.3L heads milled .040. I went 10.48 on 93 octane pump gas

Over 11.5 is a lot of compression for pump gas. Glad to see its ok. I bet raising the compression from 10:1 to 11.5:1 is worth 5% more power and torque.

T-Rex will bleed compression like a ****. According to my completely wrong SCR and DCR figures, you could get away with 13.1:1 with a T-Rex in a 346. I don't have .006 numbers, so I'm guesstimating 291 and 299. With a 13.1:1 SCR, I figure you'll have about a 9.1:1 DCR, which is about the safe limit of 93 octane @ 28-29 degrees timing. I wouldn't run more than 12.5:1 though, cuz it'll be hard to get that compression, but I wouldn't run just 11:1, that'll kill too much power with a giant sloppy cam like that.

I am all for running as much compression possible but stock head cars run ok. 12.5:1 would be insane if it worked with 93 octane.
