Default Cams in Nor-cal

Im in northern cali and I was wondering what kind of head/cam packages I could run and still pass smog. Does anyone know? Id like to run the largest cam I can. Any suggestions

Call Force Fed Performance in Roseville and talk to Keith. I live in sacramento and have been thinking about this myself. You've got to keep the overlap down if you want to pass smog. You could pass with something like the tr 224, but you probably will want a custom cam set-up for your car.

TR224 cam with a 114 lsa is what you want then. Bad thing is you cant take full advantage of the cam and heads if you dont go with LT headers. Only thing you can do as a header is a shorty and it doesn't help much.

It sucks livin in cali (CARB). He does have a 99 though, so he might get 10-15rwhp. Not a good gain like lt's, but the only other option is to stay stock and get a 0rwhp gain.

Does anyone know how this cam sounds?

I have a TR224 on a 114 LSA and it's pretty much the largest cam you can get and still safely pass smog with a tune. It sounds pretty good, even though it is mild, you can still hear some lope. I love mine.

feorcity02- how much did this cam help your car. You went cam only, no heads right?
What about 112 lsa. Not to sound dumb, but I thought in a car with a manual tranny, you wanted a lower lsa like 108 or 110

You tranny has nothing to do with the LSA that you want. Some people prefer a ligher LSA for A4 cars because they idle lower than M6's.

The cam helped a lot. I noticed a good gain with just the cam, then when the headers went in the gain was even better. I plan to get a larger blower cam soon though. It will not pass emmisions though

As for a 112LSA, I know people who have passed with it with a good tune. You can give it a shot, I'd imagine you would be fine.

I've actually heard of a guy getting away with a 228/228 on a 114 lsa. If you're worried about smog though, I wouldn't chance it and just go with the TR224 on a 114.

I use the 224/224/114 with the mods below (EGR was obviously on the car at that moment). Sniffer was right at the limit, and you'll need to find a smog shop that doesn't have very good eyesight to pass visual (long tube headers). I suggest going only to shops that will allow you to "pre-test" the car, so you can be sure it will pass before they test it officially for DMV.

Good luck.

I work in the service dept. of a dealership, so Im not too worried about the visual, its the sniffer that I have to beat. I know I could get around smog for know if it came down to it, but I heard that we are soon going to have enhanced smog laws or something like that in my area. I dont know whats envolved so I dont know If I would be able to continue to beat the system. Any advice guys????

I'm just gonna be praying that I can find someone who I can pay off to pass my car. I was talking to a guy over the weekend who said that their was someone who puts the car down as a civic or something
