Default Procedure to check valve springs?

Trying to figure out why my car is chugging under load, and idles like crap. The valvetrain noise has increased substantially. New motor, with ~500 miles on it. After reading a few posts, it sounds like a valve spring may have let go or something. Is their an easy way to just CHECK them out. I looked on howto.com, and not being mechanically inclined it looks like I can figure it out. It’s a ’99 so I need to remove the coil packs, then the covers – is that it?

I've been posting this same response since I figured out my stumbling and idle problems. I had a loose spark plug wire. Check those out, particularly number 8. It might save you a lot of headache.
