Default heads only swap

would it be worth any noticable gains for just swapping aftermarket heads on a stock cam...i have access to a set of heads for a deal but dont know if it's worth it to put them on right now w/o the cam

probably not worth the amount of work...see if you cant pick up at least like an ls6 cam on the cheap...no tuning should be needed and its like 30 more mins of work involved.

What type of heads are you replacing with? If they are ported they'll make more power of course. I'd say if you can get a deal on heads get them. Then you can decide on what cam will match the heads best. Then either put them on w/o the cam or wait until you get the cam and do it all at once. Either way, just make sure you do any necessary spring swapping before you R&R the heads. It's much easier to change springs with the heads off the engine.

Not sure how they would compare, but the thread on the AFR head only change might provide some useful information. I have a Vette and to me a head change is much easier than a cam change. I have been considering a head only change with the Crane 1.8 rockers, which might put me at the level I want to be without having to remove the entire steering assembly, Z51 cooling, etc. etc. etc.
