What should I do for an engine rebuild?
Ok so I have a stock 98 Ls1 engine in my Z28. It only has 53,000 miles as of right now, but im thinking of building it up however im not sure if I should use the 98 Ls1 block or if I should just sell my engine as a whole package and take the funds to buy an LS6 iron block and build from there. Im hoping to eventually go with an ATI Procharger, but would like to keep the stock cubed 347 because I dont want to go overboard when all I think i will need is a forge 347. Is this the best/most economical way to go or should I simple build off of my 98 block? Thanks and any info would be great!

I see no reason why you should go to the iron block. If you use good building fundamentals you should have no problems.I would up grade the rods and pistons, cam, heads just don,t go over board.

ok, yea i dont need a radical package, i just want a well built engine that can handle a decent amount of boost, maybe 8-10 psi. I know the stock can take a max of 8 psi, so i just want something a little more reliable that could take a little more boost and not have to worry about it. Do you think I should have it stroked out to a 383 or would that be an overkill and is the 98 block the same as the 99-02 blocks or is it weaker? thanks!

As ROGERSPERF. said I don't see why you're so worried about the aluminum block, do a search and you'll find that there are plenty of guys running FI setups on their stock block.
As for the 383 comment, alot of guy have squeezed out LOTS of power on just a forged 347, a 383 would be nice but remember, don't go overboard with it.

ok, thanks for all the info guys. Yea im not worried about the aluminum block, i know its real strong, i was just wondering if it made sense to switch it out with an iron block but if its not needed then thats fine with me. Thanks for the info too on the iron block. I know the LS6's that are in some of the F-bodys and in the vettes are aluminum I just thought that they made aftermarket iron ls6 blocks but they are actually 6.0 engine blocks? Are they from the chevy trucks?

there currently are no aftermarket blocks available.

Wow, learn something new every day lol. I appreciate all the info on the different types of blocks. I was really confused before because I had read numerous posts on engine builds and understood how with the change of the stroke the CI of the engine changes but had no idea about the differences in the blocks. Thanks again, cant wait to start building up my engine!
