can a bad ring score a cylinder?

can a bad ring score a cylinder? can it? if i do have a bad ring (compression or oil, i dunno yet)...what are the chances the cylinder wall is screwed up? an easy fix would be to just take the piston out, and put a new ring on... or would i be better off replacing all the rings? i can atleast do this in my garage. if its messed up and has to be honed, thats gonna cost a bit more lol.
