Default OH MY DEAR GOD..... ill never get the oil pump right..

im thinking of pulling off the pump to swap my stock chain for a updated direct replacement ls2 chain.. which is all find and good till i read the oil pump right up, please tell me its not as hard as it looks in those pics or that guy makes it sound..

is it worth a lil extra security to risk messing up and possibly having to pull the motor or something, or going thru what looks like it could easily turn into hours of hell resintalling that tube/oring and tube bolt?

Relax, it's not that bad, just follow the write up. You are using JMX's write up, aren't you? His is the best. As soon as you get the timing cover off, stuff a rag in the oil pan incase you drop a bolt down there. Just remember not to button it up with the rag still in there! And use a new O-ring just to be safe.

It was a pain in the *** for me, although it only added a couple hours to the install so it's not a huge deal.

It was very easy for me also! Just pay attention to the directions and go slow. He puts the directions down very detailed but sometimes very detailed directions can make you feel like your doing it wrong. Sometimes you may need to use a small amount of muscling or jiggling or what not to get things on, so dont be afraid if things dont go on or come off like butter, but it should go smoothly. Also depending on how mechanically inclined you are will determine on how difficult the install will be. Good Luck

It's not TOO hard. It just takes some time, a 12 pack of your favorite beer to relax you a bit, and LOTS of patience.

It's really not that hard...you might want to reconsider getting a few o-rings as they are like 5 bucks haha...the only hard part is aligning the crank gear with the oil pump and slipping it on all while putting the pick up tube in the oil pump...it makes it worse when oil from the oil pump (priming) is dripping everywere haha...

it's not that bad really. the worst part was getting to a couple of the pan bolts. it took longer to drop the pan than to swap oil pumps. oil pump took about 10-15 minutes and most of that was trying to get the pickup bolt back in. let us know how i turns out.

exactly...i forgot all about how difficult it was to get to the oil pan bolts...you definatly need a nice long extension and a 10mm gear wrench...and it still takes a little bit...

Just be patient, work slowly, think about what you are doing, and use your head.

Unhappy Can the oil be left in the pan?

I'm doing the cam, timing chain/pump next weekend.

I've got a sump full of $$ Redline oil with ~300 miles on it.

Is there any way the oil can be left in the car? Say I don't stuff the rags down into the oil pan to catch the bolt, I don't plan to drop?

What if I took a piece of wire and wrapped it around the threads of the bolt like JMX did?

Even if you stuff a rag into the pan, it doesn't go into the deep part of the pan where the oil is. I changed mine anyway though a couple hundred miles after the swap though just in case any crap fell in the engine while the front cover was off.
