Question AFR 205 Heads with TR220 or TR224?

I was hoping to get some opinions on a couple of head/cam combos.

I currently have a TR220 cam with stock heads and have been thinking of swapping in a set of AFR 205 heads. However, lately I've been tinkering with the idea of replacing the TR220 for a TR224 and then add the AFR 205s.

I have heard in the past that a straight cam swap from a TR220 to a TR224 with stock heads is not really worth it as far as gains are concerned but how would that change when you start adding heads to the equation? Would the TR224 compliment the AFRs better?

Do you guys think it would be worth the time and effort to swap cams or just stick with the TR220?

To give some background, I am in CA and can't go bigger than a 224 for smog reasons, the car is only street driven, and other mods include LTs w/ cats, lid, and SLP D/D.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Maybe Tony from AFR has some suggestions?

Thanks guys,

Brian

Stick with the 220. Just make sure you run a good quench by using a thinner than GM standard gaskets. Something along the lines of a .045 compressed.

BTW I thought LT's are not smog legal in cali.

AFR actually has a 224/228 (114?) per thier specifications. Supposedly it was configured to compliment the heads quite well. I'm sure the 224/224 would do a great job too however.

Oh just saw the smog requirement....

Thanks for the quick replies.

Predator-Z:

Your right about the LTs not being legal in CA as they are "supposed to" fail visual. I am hoping that I can find a "reasonable" smog station soon since I'm due in a couple of months. If I can't get by smog then I will more than likely ditch the heads/cam idea and go the forced induction route albeit it will cost more.

Grimes:

Yeah, one of the great things about living here.

If you're looking for ideas, I'd suggest a 224 and gmppheads. Look @ the 60cc chamber
if you're trying to stay CA legal, otherwise go w/62cc & bigger cam. The AFR's are fine
but overkill if planning on being CA legal.

Like I said, no real big difference between the two. Perhaps 10 rwhp peak. AFR's are where the power is to be made by raising compression, tightening quench and most important the best tune you can get.
I know that gas is 91 octane in Cali so you can still run 10.8:1 > 11.0:1 SCR.

So a little mill, thin gasket, tune and voila, you should be 400+ A4 and 410/420 M6.

The AFRs are a quality investment and if you're going to spend the time and money on them, I'd get a cam specifically suited to them - like AFRs 224/228 or another recommendation from AFR or one of our sponsors.

i thought all smog type testing was OBDII testing only for 96 & up ? even in cali ?

Thanks for all the replies.

As it stands now, it looks like I will stick with the TR220 and AFR 205 combo and probably bump the compression up some. As stated earlier, with the smog requirements in this state I don't have many options as far as cams go or else I probably would have gone with the 224/228.

Anyways, can anyone give me a ballpark as to what the compression ratio would be if the heads were milled say .030? Guessing about 10.5:1?

I'm assuming your 220 is on a 114. Remember the 220 has aggressive lobes and AFR 205s are emissions freindly, so again, talk to AFR, if you are sticking with the 220 because you expect it to be better for emissions than the 224/228 I think you'll find that's not true.

I like your plan. With the 220 Cam I would mill the AFR's .030 and use the cometis .042 gaskets, P/V clearance won't be a problem and you'll have killer midrange power.

I agree, but I would only suggest milling .024 for a 62 cc final chamber volume due to the small cam and 91 octane gas. Any more CR than that with the little overlap that cam provides might get into some knock retard with the gas available here. We offer a 220/224 that would pass emissions but the gains would be nominal over your current grind. Unless you found a buyer for your current cam, I would probably leave it alone. You might want to check where it is installed....I would put it in on a 114 ICL. That could be worth some HP if your 2-4 advanced right now.

The tighter quench, higher CR, and AFR 205's should definately wake that car up....the even better news is that it will have more drivability than stock, more power than stock, and probably add 2-3 points to your fuel economy with the right tune.

Let us know how everything works out....

Once again, thanks for all the help.

Looks like I will keep the TR220, mill the heads a little, and use a smaller gasket. Tony, once I get a little closer to doing this I might drop you a line to ensure I covered all facets.

Who knows, Corona isn't that far from Pacoima so maybe I'll stop by if it's alright with you.

Yeah, I couldn't live there because of the restrictions they put on firearms
